By Staff Report-

WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Limitless Park (WLLP) and Kiwanis Club of Warsaw recently formed a partnership for the installation of an ADA kayak/canoe launch.

This launch will provide barrier-free access to Winona Lake, according to a news release from the Winona Lake Park Department.

In November 2020, WLLP was approached by Kiwanis Club President Jim Molebash and President-elect Brock Tidball regarding the concept of an accessible launch. They were excited to learn that one of the main phases of the Winona Lake Limitless Park master plan included upgrades to the beach, pier and the installation of an ADA kayak/canoe launch.

An adaptive kayak/canoe boat launch offers a safe and accessible way for adaptive paddlers, those in wheelchairs and those with disabilities to enter and exit a boat more easily, the release states. The launch will also provide stabilization for youth and senior citizen boaters. An adaptive launch is not just for physical disabilities. Paddling and nature have been proven to help soothe post-traumatic stress disorder for veterans as well, according to the release.

The Winona Lake Limitless Park conducts organized youth programs and activities, including paddle craft training, each summer. Installation of the kayak/canoe launch will create the potential expansion of these programs.

Total project cost estimate is $42,000. After funding is secured, a ribbon-cutting ceremony is anticipated at the annual Fourth of July celebration.

Kiwanis Warsaw has made a commitment of $8,000 to this project. A $6,000 grant was awarded and an additional $2,000 came from fundraising efforts. Kiwanis Indiana has made a commitment of $2,000.

Kiwanis Warsaw is hosting their annual 2022 Rose Sale - purchase a dozen roses for $18. Pre-order prior to March 10. A portion of the proceeds from the sale support the funds awarded to this project. Contact any Kiwanis Club member or email [email protected] to place an order.

Kiwanis Club of Warsaw has been in existence for 101 years and has approximately 60 members. Visit the website at www.warsawkiwanis.net.
