Mast still had a gun and the first man said he heard a gunshot followed by the first man falling off the porch, according to court documents. Mast then returned to his vehicle and fired a second shot toward the residence, according to court documents.

The woman said Mast was an abusive ex-boyfriend. She said she didn’t want to leave with him due to his abusive behavior. She said she was in the residence and didn’t see the shooting, but heard the gunshot. She verified there was a second gunshot.

Mast said he got into a verbal argument with the second man and the woman about the woman returning to Elkhart. Mast allegedly admitted to leaving the residence and returning again, getting into arguments each time with the woman and the second man.

Mast allegedly said he shot the first man because he had a knife and was acting aggressive. Mast said the second man had a baseball bat during the incident.

Mast said the handgun jammed after the first shot at the first man. He knew that because he pulled the trigger again and the gun didn’t fire. Mast described continuing to the road, clearing the jammed round and firing a second shot. On the way back to Elkhart County, Mast said he disposed of the gun.

The woman said the first man was not displaying a knife.

An officer was able to locate a bullet hole in the porch roof, according to court documents.
