Pair Of Lancers Track And Field Athletes Earn NCCAA Honors

Isaac Brown was named the NCCAA Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. He won the high jump with a height of 6-feet-9.5.
Isaac Beatty was recognized as the NCCAA Track Athlete of the Week after placing first in the 4x800-meter relay and second in the 4x400. Beatty also grabbed a third-place finish in the 800 at the meet.
Beatty and Brown helped the Lancers to a runner-up finish in the meet, Grace's best finish in team history. Grace’s men’s and women’s teams both finished as the league runners-up.
The Lancers will now turn their attention to the NAIA Indoor Nationals which will start on March 3 in Brookings, S.D.
Cougars Get Better Of Lancers
WHITE PINE, Tenn. – Grace’s baseball team was unable to take a game off St. Xavier in a weekend series in Tennessee.
Grace’s offense was quiet in the opening game on Friday, falling 10-2. The Lancers were held to two hits — one by Chris Griffin and Cal Curiel.
The Cougars had three home runs to help their cause, scoring four runs in the third and five in the seventh.
Grace’s early lead slipped away in the second game, which SXU won 9-5.
The teams were nearly identical on offense with SXU tallying 10 hits and Grace with nine, but the Cougars bunched their production well.
Grace grabbed an early 3-1 lead after two innings. Sam Newkirk had a two-run homer in the first inning to spark the Lancers.
But SXU grabbed the lead for good with a six-run outburst in the fourth. The Cougars benefitted from two walks and an error, seizing a 7-3 lead.
Grace managed to push two more runs across the plate before the end of the game, but the damage was already done.
Newkirk hit 2 for 4 with three RBIs, and Jeff Pawlik had two hits which included a home run.
Saturday’s opener was a pitchers’ duel with SXU winning 2-0.
The Cougars manufactured a run in the opening inning with just one hit, stealing two bases and scoring on a wild pitch.
The 1-0 lead for SXU proved to be all that the Cougars needed. Grace had one baserunner in the third and fourth innings. In the sixth, Grace had two base runners with a hit batsman and a single, but the potential rally ended with a double play.
In Grace’s final chance in the seventh, the Lancers earned a runner on second and third base with just one out. But the next two batters for Grace struck out, erasing the comeback bid.
Kameron Koch tossed the first 5.2 innings, striking out eight and allowing four hits and two runs.
Griffin, Alex Rich and Josh Cosme had the only hits for the Lancers in the game.
The final game was a 12-4 win for SXU. Grace had 10 hits in the inning but could only translate that to four runs. The Cougars, conversely, turned 14 hits into 12 runs.
SXU also scored all 12 of its runs in just three innings with a four-run third, five-run fourth and three-run seventh.
Rich had the hot bat for Grace, batting 4 for 5 with a double and run scored. Mason Meyer hit 2 for 4 with two solo home runs, Newkirk also had a solo homer, and Curiel hit 2 for 3.
Caleb Farney was Grace’s most effective reliever, pitching a clean inning of relief with one strikeout.
The Lancers (5-7) will compete again next weekend in Kokomo, Ind., with a four-game series with Trinity Christian.
Lancers end regular season in defeat
WINONA LAKE - Grace’s men’s basketball team was unable to defeat Huntington on Senior Day, falling 74-63 on Saturday to end the regular season.
As a result of the loss, the Lancers slipped to fifth in the Crossroads League and will have to travel to Mt. Vernon Nazarene in the quarterfinals of the CL Tournament.
The quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday next week at 7 p.m.
Grace’s offense largely struggled in the defeat. The Lancers shot 40 percent as a team for the game and just 4 of 22 (18 percent) on 3-pointers.
Grace also turned the ball over 20 times compared to just eight for the Foresters (21-9, 10-8 CL).
The Foresters began the game sharply, scoring the first seven points of the contest. Grace responded calmly, scoring eight straight points to surge ahead.
Huntington had the next five points to regain the lead and stayed in front for most of the half.
The Foresters pulled ahead by eight as Grace’s offense sputtered through the middle portions of the half.
Grace began to find success on the break, beating the Foresters down the court on a few possessions to rally back. Jakob Gibbs had a game-high 13 points in the half, providing over half of Grace’s scoring before halftime.
The Lancers (22-8, 11-7 CL) had a chance to tie the game with the score 26-24, but Grace missed a fastbreak dunk.
Huntington promptly raced down the court and scored to stop Grace’s momentum. The Lancers surrendered an 8-1 run to end the first half and went into halftime down 34-25.
Grace shot just 35 percent overall from the floor, 10 percent on 3-pointers (1 of 10) and 57 percent on free throws (4 of 7). The Lancers turned the ball over eight times in the first half compared to just three turnovers by HU.
Just like the first half, the Lancers were sluggish to start the second half. It took Grace over three minutes to get on the scoreboard, and the Foresters pulled away by 17.
Grace went to its bench for a spark, and the subs came through. Cade Gibbs scored five quick points, and Brycen Graber buried a 3-pointer to slice HU’s lead to eight with 10 minutes remaining.
Not long afterwards Cade Gibbs hit a triple, and Jakob Gibbs connected on an and-1 to pull the team within 58-53 with 5:10 remaining.
But Grace did not make another field goal for the next two minutes, and Huntington took advantage to grab a 12-point edge at 68-56.
The Lancers were unable to generate a miraculous late comeback, missing its final four 3s to allow Huntington to run out the clock.
Jakob Gibbs led Grace in scoring with 20 points, shooting 8 of 15 from the floor. Cade Gibbs posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Ian Scott tallied 8 points, 5 boards, 3 blocks and 2 assists, and Graber added 9 points, 3 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Jake Wadding had 7 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, and Frankie Davidson tallied five points and four boards.

Grace finished the regular season with 18 wins, which tied a program record. The Lady Lancers also wrapped up the sixth seed in the Crossroads League tournament and will face St. Francis on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
The game started off even as the teams were deadlocked at seven nearing the midpoint of the first quarter.
After a successful trip to the charity stripe for Kaylee Patton, Grace went on a mini-run to extend the lead.
Karlee Feldman scored a pair of tough buckets in the paint, and Kensie Ryman converted from beyond the arc to put Grace ahead by eight.
Maddie Ryman hit a late trifecta, and Kiersten Poor made a layup as Grace entered the second quarter with a 24-13 lead.
Grace was a perfect 3 of 3 from 3-point land in the first quarter.
Huntington cut Grace’s lead down to six in the second. A basket from Kenzie McMahon and a trey from Patton pushed Grace back in front by double digits.
The Foresters again cut into the Lady Lancers’ lead late, but Grace answered with another 3-point shot. Poor hit from 3-point land, and Feldman converted late to send the game to the half with Grace in front 40-30.
Grace shot 46 percent from the field and 75 percent from beyond the arc in the first half. Huntington struggled, converting just 35 percent of their shots.
The Lady Lancers had 13 assists on 14 made shots. Grace turned the ball over six times compared to Huntington’s five. Maddie Ryman scored nine points in the first half.
A cold-shooting third quarter allowed the Forester’s back in the game.
Grace went the first 6:12 of the third quarter before scoring a point. Grace went 1 of 12 from the field and 1 of 4 from the charity stripe. Grace turned the ball over seven times.
Huntington outscored Grace 15-3 in the quarter and took a two-point lead into the final 10 minutes.
The Foresters carried their momentum into the fourth. Huntington built its lead up to 12 by the midpoint of the quarter.
Ryman scored seven points for Grace, which helped the Lady Lancers get within five with two minutes left.
The Lady Lancers continued to chip away at the deficit. A Peyton Murphy layup got Grace within two.
Grace had chances late but was unable to come away with the victory as Huntington held onto the 68-65 lead.
“This was a disappointing end to a really good year,” said Grace head Dan Davis. “We suffered from the same mistakes that have cost us throughout the year. We have a few days to regroup and get ready for St. Francis. No more redo’s starting Tuesday.”
Grace finished the game shooting 36 percent from the field compared to Huntington’s 37 percent. The Lady Lancers turned the ball over 18 times.
Ryman led all players with 17 points and also added five boards. Patton scored 15 points, and Poor added 14.
Feldman scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Grace will travel to St. Francis on Tuesday to begin the opening round. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
