By Josh Neuhart-

HOOVER, Ala. - Grace’s baseball team nabbed two more wins to conclude its opening weekend of the season.

The Lancers swept Trinity International on Saturday, winning 5-1 and 17-2.

Grace took three games in the four-game series with the Trojans. The Lancers yielded just seven runs across 28 innings this weekend.

The first game was a pitchers’ duel with each team mustering just five hits apiece.

Kameron Koch impressed in his start, tossing 4.2 innings with no runs and two scattered hits.

Grace held a 2-0 lead by the time that Koch exited from the mound.

In the second inning, Josh Cosme singled, and Collin Lytle came in to run for him. Lytle eventually raced home on a sacrifice bunt, a single and a passed ball.

Grace doubled its lead in the fifth inning. Sam Newkirk was hit by a pitch with one out. He advanced one base at a time, taking advantage of another hit batsman, a wild pitch and a passed ball to put the Lancers on top 2-0.

The Lancers scored three runs over the final two innings; Chris Griffin was involved in two of those runs, plating in the sixth and producing a two-out RBI single in the seventh. The other run came courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Patrick Danforth.

Kyle Aten tossed the final two innings in relief, yielding one run with two hits and a pair of strikeouts.

Griffin hit 2 for 3 with 1 run, 1 walk and 1 RBI, Lytle scored twice as a pinch runner, and Danforth added 1 RBI, 1 walk and 1 stolen base.

The second game saw an explosion of offense by Grace. The Lancers wasted little time scoring, producing nine runs in the first frame.

Austin Carr had three RBIs alone in the first inning, and Griffin, Newkirk and Carr each had a double.

Grace added six more runs across the next two innings. Danforth drove in a run with a double in the second, and Jake Cox had a sacrifice fly.

Carr continued his torrid day at the plate with a solo home run in the third inning, and Newkirk and Alex Rich followed that up with back-to-back doubles.

After three innings were complete, Grace led 15-2.

Grace held the Trojans scoreless for the final five innings thanks to the contributions of Grace’s bullpen.

Steven Hernandez made the start, tossing three innings and giving up two runs.

Hunter Schumacher was practically untouchable. He struck out five of the six batters he faced in relief to register the win.

Joey Springer and Bret Wilhelmi also tossed scoreless innings of relief.

Carr hit 3 for 6 with 5 RBIs and two runs scored, and Danforth was a perfect 4 for 4 with three runs driven in.

Cox had three RBIs, Newkirk doubled twice, and Rich had two doubles and three runs scored. Cal Curiel, Lytle, Cosme and Pawlik each plated twice.

The Lancers will end their time in Alabama next weekend with a four-game series against Aquinas.

Grace’s Offense Quieted At No. 5 Wildcats

MARION - Grace’s men’s basketball team was held under 70 points for just the third time this season, faltering 79-69 at No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday.

The Lancers (19-7, 8-6 Crossroads League) shot a better percentage than the Wildcats (23-3, 14-0 CL) and had one more rebound. But Grace turned the ball over 19 times, and the Wildcats shot 36 free throws.

Grace began the game sluggishly; the Lancers almost immediately faced a double-digit deficit. IWU grabbed a 12-2 lead before four minutes had expired.

Grace still trailed by double figures at the midway mark of the half before a 6-0 spurt pulled Grace to within six. Jake Wadding had four of those points.

The Wildcats pushed their lead up to nine in the final minute of the half, but Grace scored five quick points before halftime.

The Lancers scored last when Brycen Graber made a shot in the final 11 seconds, and IWU led 41-35 at halftime.

Grace (47 percent) shot better than IWU (41 percent) from the floor before halftime. But the Lancers committed nine turnovers and shot just 5 of 10 on free throws.

Grace began the second half by applying pressure on the Wildcats. Eddie Gill IV had a driving layup to cut the deficit to four.

A few minutes later, Grace missed a trio of 3-pointers that would have cut further into IWU’s lead. But shortly after, Wadding and Frankie Davidson made layups to bring Grace to within three at 44-41.

Unfortunately for Grace, the Lancers’ offense hit a dry spell for the next 10 minutes. Grace scored just nine points over the next 10:55, allowing the Wildcats to take control of the contest.

With less than five minutes remaining, Grace’s deficit had ballooned from three points to 18.

The Lancers continued to battle until the final possession, trimming IWU’s lead down to 10. But the damage had already been done.

Grace shot 46 percent from the floor compared to 42 percent for IWU. The Lancers also had one more rebound than IWU.

The biggest difference came at the foul line and in the turnover battle. The Wildcats forced 19 turnovers by Grace, directly resulting in 19 points for IWU.

IWU also shot 27 of 36 from the free throw line, making more foul shots than Grace attempted (14 of 20).

Davidson finished the game with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, and Wadding added 11 points and four boards.

Jakob Gibbs scored 10 points off the bench before fouling out, and Elijah Malone had seven points and two blocks in 15 minutes while battling foul trouble.

Ian Scott tallied 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots, and Cade Gibbs chipped in 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Lancers are back home on Wednesday for a women’s/men’s doubleheader against Goshen. The women’s game will tip off at 6 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 8 p.m.

Lady Lancers fall to top-15 opponent

MARION, Ind. – Grace’s women’s basketball team dropped a 70-55 contest on Saturday afternoon at No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan.

The game was tightly contested through much of the first half, but a scoring drought in the third doomed the Lady Lancers’ (16-10, 6-8 Crossroads League) hopes of victory.

Grace scored the first five points of the game. Kiersten Poor converted from close to open the scoring, and Maddie Ryman hit from behind the arc.

A layup from Kenzie McMahon near the midpoint of the quarter pushed the Lady Lancers’ lead to 12-5.

IWU (21-4, 10-3) went on a small run to end the quarter, but a layup from Peyton Murphy sent Grace into the second quarter with a 14-12 lead.

After trading buckets to start the quarter, Grace fell behind for the first time following a 3-point shot from IWU.

Grace briefly recaptured the lead, following a trifecta from Ryman. The Lady Lancers led 23-21 with 3:28 left in the half.

IWU ended the second quarter on a 10-1 run, which sent the game into the half with Grace trailing 31-24.

At the half, Ryman led all players with nine points. Grace shot 38 percent compared to IWU’s 33 percent. Grace had 11 first-half turnovers.

Grace went scoreless through the first four minutes of the second half. The Lady Lancers surrendered the first seven points of the third quarter; IWU eventually extended its advantage to 18. A pair of Karlee Feldman free throws ended the scoring drought.

Grace struggled from the field throughout the third quarter as they would convert at a 36-percent clip from the field and turned the ball over seven times.

A late field goal from Poor put Grace’s deficit at 52-34 as they entered the final quarter.

Feldman and Ryman scored Grace’s first eight points in the fourth, but IWU’s offense couldn’t be slowed as they maintained the 18-point lead.

Kaylee Patton, Carissa Wiegman and Murphy all scored late as Grace fell 70-55.

“There are going to be some days when things don't go your way, and today was one of those days,” said Grace head coach Dan Davis. “It felt like we came out strong in the first quarter, but we lost our rhythm in the second and never got it back. We still have a lot to play for these next two weeks, so I know these girls will come out ready for the next one.”

Ryman scored 18 points and added five rebounds. Feldman double-doubled for the 20th time this season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Grace shot 43 percent from the floor against IWU’s 40 percent, but the Lady Lancers were not able to overcome 21 turnovers which the Wildcats turned into 19 points.

Grace will next be in action on Wednesday as it plays host Crossroads League opponent Goshen at 6 p.m.
