HOOVER, Ala. – The 2022 campaign officially kicked off for Grace’s baseball team on Friday.

The Lancers played a doubleheader against Trinity International, dominating the opener 22-1 before dropping the second game 3-0.

Grace’s bats were red-hot to start the season. The Lancers ripped off 10 runs in the second inning to seize control of the game.

The first six batters of the second inning for Grace reached base safely. Sam Newkirk doubled and homered in the inning. Cal Curiel safely reached base twice, and Bradyn McIntosh drove in a pair of runs.

The Trojans pushed one run across in the top of the fourth, but Grace countered with a nine-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth.

In the fifth, Grace was aided with three walks and four hit batsmen. Alex Rich had a two-run double, and Josh Cosme had a two-run single.

In the sixth inning, Austin Carr tripled to lead off the frame. He came home to score on a double by Chris Griffin. Rich and Jake Cox also drove in a run in the sixth for the final 22-1 scoreline.

Evan Etchison and Mason Meyer combined to pitch a gem from the mound. Etchison made the Opening Day start, going five innings and striking out six. He allowed one unearned run on three hits with two walks.

Meyer tossed the final two innings in relief, incredibly striking out five while allowing one hit.

Offensively, Jeff Pawlik hit 3 for 4 with 2 runs, 3 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Newkirk drove in four runs with two hits and three RBIs.

Griffin tallied 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 runs driven in, and Carr went 2 for 4 with three runs scored.

Rich finished 3 for 5 with three runs and four RBIs, Cosme had two RBIs, and Cox had two runs and two RBIs. Curiel and McIntosh each plated twice.

In the second game, all three runs were scored in the first inning.

TIU had three of its five hits in the opening frame. The Trojans began the game with two singles and a double to push a run across.

TIU added two more runs after a Lancer error as the Trojans grabbed a 3-0 lead.

Grace had a chance to score in the fourth inning. Carr walked and Griffin singled, but the Lancers could not manufacture a run.

The Lancers also had a runner in scoring position in the fifth and the seventh. In the seventh, Grace had runners on second and third with one out. But the game ended with a strikeout and a pop out.

Isaiah Herbster was extremely effective in relief for Grace, pitching the final five innings and allowing two hits and zero runs with five strikeouts.

Cosme walked twice in the defeat, and Carr had a hit and a walk.

The Lancers will end the four-game series with TIU Saturday with another 1 p.m. doubleheader.
