Unfortunately for Grace, the Cougars made a dramatic late 3-pointer to secure a 71-70 victory over the Lady Lancers.
The Lady Lancers (16-9, 6-7 Crossroads League) led nearly the whole way, but a desperation triple from Cougars ended Grace’s bid for the win.
Maddie Ryman once again shined offensively, leading all players with 26 points.
After surrendering the first basket of the game to the Cougars (12-8, 6-5 CL), Grace got its first lead when Kenzie McMahon converted an and-1.
Kaylee Patton and Kiersten Poor would briefly extend Grace’s advantage, but the Lady Lancers held a narrow 9-8 lead at the midpoint of the quarter.
An eight-point run gave Grace its first substantial lead of the game. Karlee Feldman muscled in a layup in the paint, and Maddie Ryman and Patton both hit from 3-point range to push the Lady Lancers ahead 17-8.
The Cougars ended Grace’s scoring run late, but an old-fashioned 3-point play from Peyton Murphy sent the game into the second with Grace ahead 20-12.
Grace continued to find offensive success early in the second. Patton hit her second trifecta of the game to push the Lady Lancers’ lead into double digits.
St. Francis had no answer for Feldman as she continued to convert in the paint. Grace maintained a 10-point advantage with a little over three minutes in the quarter.
The Cougars were able to cut into the deficit before the half with a 3-point basket and a late steal and score. Grace’s lead at the half was 35-30.
Feldman had 9 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks at the half. Ryman and Patton scored nine and eight points respectively.
The Lady Lancers shot 50 percent compared to the Cougars’ 40 percent. Grace also held a 22-13 rebound advantage.
Grace scored 10 second-chance points and did not allow a single point from the St. Francis in the same category.
McMahon drew first blood in the third quarter, but the Cougars continued to slowly claw into the deficit. Two minutes into the second half, St. Francis had drawn within two.
At the midpoint of the third, the Cougars recaptured the lead at the free throw line. Ryman immediately answered back with a 3-point shot to vault Grace back in front.
The two teams would go blow for blow as the quarter came to a close. The Lady Lancers carried a 55-53 advantage into the final frame.
A 3-point shot from Ryman pushed Grace’s lead to seven early in the fourth, but by the midpoint of the quarter a single point separated the teams.
With under three minutes left, a shot by Kiersten Poor from beyond the arc gave Grace a four-point lead.
USF remained calm and managed to tie the score on a banked 3-point shot with just over a minute remaining.
With 6.8 seconds on the clock, Ryman drew a foul and converted two free throws to give Grace a 70-68 lead.
On the ensuing inbound play, the Cougars put up a contested 3-point jumper that found its mark.
Grace had time for one last desperation shot, but it would fall short as Grace dropped the heartbreaker 71-70.
“This was a tough one. It was a disappointed locker room because we had chances to close it out, and we didn’t. A few unforced turnovers and missed chances to get defensive stops cost us the game,” said Grace head coach Dan Davis. “There are still positives to take away from this game, and I know that we will be ready to go on Saturday.”
Feldman again double-doubled with 14 points and 17 rebounds. Feldman recently moved into Grace’s top-five in single-season rebounding (286) in program history.
Patton scored 14 points to go along with five rebounds. Murphy added six points and four rebounds off the bench.
Grace finished the game shooting 49 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc.
The Lady Lancers will next be in action on Saturday when they travel to take on No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan.
