Reception Celebrates Culver Family Wellness Center

NORTH WEBSTER - Once housing a public library, the whole north wing of the North Webster Community Center now houses the Culver Family Wellness Center, including the Gladys Culver Education Room, and the Goshen Physicians Family Medicine North Webster Clinic.

Friday evening, the NWCC hosted a “Candy Canes and Cocktails” reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the Wellness Center. Attendees also got to take sneak-peek tours of the Goshen Health clinic, which opens for business Dec. 27.

Emcee for the evening, Emily Shipley, North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Chamber of Commerce president, gave the welcoming remarks. She said, “I can not be more thrilled to be here with you to open this wing of the Community Center, but also to celebrate our community and the amazing year we have had.”

She introduced the speakers for the program, starting with Dennis Wagoner, president of the NWCC Board of Directors.

Wagoner said he’s known Bart and Cinda Culver and their family - for whom the Wellness Center is named - for a long time. Bart is a “real true entrepreneur,” Wagoner said, who owns Bart’s Watersports.

“We’ve been lucky here in North Webster that he stayed here. We’ve been lucky because he’s hired so many folks to work for him, and he’s been extremely generous to the community while here,” Wagoner said.

The NWCC is grateful to Bart’s and the Culver Family Foundation for supporting it since the Community Center opened in 2003, he said. “It’s our sincere desire to continue their caring attitudes and caring for North Webster at this Center. I appreciate everything you’ve done for us,” Wagoner said.

Emily Worrell, NWCC executive director, said Friday’s reception was the “first official event in the Culver Family Wellness Center. Although, Bart and Cinda are so lowkey, they probably would have preferred we call it, ‘The Center for Opportunity and Accessibility to Healthy Lifestyle, Community Engagement, Volunteering.’ But we felt like that was just a mouthful and quite a bit to put on a sign.”

However, she said, that’s what the space really is.

“It is 11,000 square foot of opportunity. Most of us know this space as the old library, or that room back there with all the large workout balls. It is used for cardio drumming and yoga, two of our low-cost much-loved cardio programs. But, let’s take it a step further,” she said. “This space is truly the first step in North Webster Community Center taking hold of its mission and letting it drive us forward.”

She said the space creates access to future opportunities - of new partnerships, families to have private areas for supervised visitations, for mental health classes and a dedicated community learning space.

“It provides access to excellent health care, low-cost wellness programming and free physical activity items,” Worrell said.

Friday’s event was the community celebrating the accomplishments of a physical space with the potential to change lives, she said.

“This is just our first step. Our new space offers a classroom, a conference room, a wellness space, a new roof, HVAC system and probably our favorite addition - the doctor’s office. And it has to be mentioned that none of this would have been possible without the entire Culver family support. I want to thank you for providing a gift that was a pivoting point in our organization, and for our community,” Worrell said.

She thanked them personally for the words of encouragement and support through the project.

Among those she also thanked were the NWCC staff, her husband Jason and parents, the NWCC Board of Directors and Goshen Health.

“To our new friends at Goshen Health, thanks for choosing us. For working incredibly hard to bring preventative healthcare to our area, and for giving us a doctor who has a true, true passion for small town values,” she said.

In conclusion, she said, “So tonight, let’s enjoy each other’s company. Let’s celebrate the accomplishment of the physical room and the future of North Webster because it truly is amazing and looking bright. It’s not just our first step. It’s a new beginning.”

Goshen Health Vice President Jon Yoder  was the next speaker. He said, “If you don’t know much about Goshen Health, let me tell you our mission. The mission of Goshen Health is to improve the health of our communities. It’s what we do. It’s why we get up in the morning and it’s why we go to work every single day.”

He said he could think of no better way of improving the health of our communities than through the partnership established with the NWCC and the Culver Family Wellness Center.

“We’re so grateful to be a part of this adventure with you,” Yoder stated. “In the next couple of weeks here, we are excited to open up our new clinic and welcome Dr. Chelsea Wolf as the physician that will be providing care out of this clinic.”

While Wolf was unable to attend Friday’s event, Yoder said she was so excited to begin seeing patients in the next couple of weeks. He described Wolf as one of the most lovely, caring and compassionate people that one could meet and she’s thrilled to be a part of what’s happening at the NWCC.

“When we think about improving the health of our communities, it’s not just about taking care of the sick inside of our clinics, but it truly is about promoting health and wellness for our patients and our communities, and that’s what makes this so special and this space so special,” Yoder said.

Concluding the speakers was District 18 State Rep. David Abbott.

“I was really pleased to come tonight because I’m really excited about what you’re doing. I think it’s so important, healthwise, in our state,” he said, stressing the importance of preventative health maintenance. “... When good things happen, it’s usually folks like you that get together and they decide to improve a community center, put in a Culver Family Wellness Center and they address the issues from the ground up like we (government) can’t do. The exceptional volunteerism and the generous donation from the Culver family - Bart and Cinda - this come to fruition and I stand here today really amazed at what I see. I think this is what we need.”

He thanked Worrell, the NWCC volunteers and board of directors and the Culver family for all the work they did in putting the Wellness Center together.

“I’m excited about this. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart,” Abbott said.
