Seven large boxes of snacks, balls, card games, craft items and more were delivered Thursday by Zimmer Biomet employees to the Baker Youth Club (BYC) as a way to give back this holiday season.

This is the third year Zimmer Biomet has done its Give Back event. Zimmer Biomet managers, supervisors and team members split into teams to gather supplies and other  donations to help in BYC’s needs, according to information provided at the event.

Angela Krebs, human resources coordinator - operations at Zimmer Biomet, said there is a supervisor forum each month and for the last couple of years, they’ve wanted to do a giveback to those who live in the community.

“Because child care is so important to our supervisors, so their team members can come into work and have reliable child care. That’s why we kind of decided to go  with the before- and after-school programs,” she said.

Zimmer Biomet reached out to BYC and BYC drafted a list of what Zimmer Biomet could physically buy that the club could use, she said. “Our team members get excited when they can bring things in instead of doing monetary, I mean monetary donations are great,” she said.

Lloyd Adams, a supervisor at Zimmer Biomet, said they are grateful for BYC because Zimmer Biomet employees depend on the club’s services.

Tracy Furnivall, BYC executive director, said the donation is “so valueable to us, such a blessing. It’s all stuff we will use throughout the year and that just allows us to not have to take money out of our operations account to go buy this stuff for the kids to be able to use. I mean, I figure we go through 50 to 75 volleyballs a year, soccer balls, tissues, crayons, the juice boxes, so it’s a huge financial support to us so we don’t have to go buy that stuff.”

BYC’s main focus is education and social-skills building, he said. Hundreds of hours of physical activity is going on in the club’s gym and soccer room. There is STEM center where hundreds of STEM projects are completed throughout the year. There are also art and craft rooms. BYC also has rooms where they provide homework help.

He thinks, besides the educational focus, the main thing that happens on a daily basis at the club is the social-skills building, where kids are interacting with other kids. He said it is vital.

“We’re just blessed and thankful for Zimmer Biomet, what they do,” Furnivall said.

He said the club received a $2,000 donation from the Zimmer Biomet Foundation last week. The donations will allow the club to give the kids at the club the best equipment the club can get.
