Big Lots, 2806 Frontage Road, Warsaw, was one of 13 new stores across the country to have their grand opening celebration on Saturday.
“So today is a pretty big day for Big Lots,” said Keith Jacobson, district manager.
The first 150 customers who walked through the door received scratch-off tickets valued at anywhere from $5 to $250 off purchases made over the weekend. Every scratch-off ticket was a winner. Big Lots also handed out free tote bags while supplies lasted.
Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Rob Parker said, “This is a needed retail in this community. This is absolutely the nicest Big Lots that I’ve ever been to in the country. We love to see it here. We love to see them continue to invest in our community. We believe that more retailers can absolutely succeed in our community. We have the wherewithal to make it financially viable for those retailers and we love Big Lots here.”
The Warsaw store has been open for about a month. It had a soft opening to “get all the kinks worked out,” but Jacobson said there were no kinks. “We are taking care of customers, and the biggest thing that we’ve heard is, ‘welcome back,’ from customers.”
Jacobson said Big Lots is committed to exceptional value, treasures and bargains for customers.
“The other piece that we’ve really (committed) strong to is to help people live big and save lots while helping making a difference, not just inside the store but the community we live and work in,” he said.
Big Lots wants to be a good neighbor, Jacobson stated, so they want the community to let them know if they’re doing well or what they could do better.
“We’re not afraid of feedback,” he said.
As customers walk through the store, he pointed out they will notice innovations, “cool” things and more.
“We’ve got a furniture department, which we have in-stock condition on most furniture. We also have the Broyhill brand, Ashley brand to help drive value to the customer,” he said. “We also have treasures along the side of the store for home furnishings, not just home furnishings but also things you can do to build a kitchen. College kids can build an entire dorm room if they wanted to.”
Big Lots offers apparel and clothing, as well as “seasonality with all seasons,” he said. “Besides that, as you walk around the building and walk around the store, we have toys, we plays well there in that space, especially a nice value with toys.”
Customers can find pet food and supplies, cleaners, household paper products, consumables and food.
“It’s a one-stop shop,” Jacobson said.
Big Lots also has a rewards program, which is a way for them to communicate with the consumer about their ads and values, he continued. “Also, you save money. It’s one of the best rewards programs in the country.”
The loyalty program, called Big Rewards, is on Newsweek’s list of best loyalty programs in America, Jacobson pointed out, and it’s pretty easy to sign up for it.
“We have over 35,000 employees and co-workers nationwide. And, of course, we have many distribution centers. We just try to bring, really truthfully, value and treasures and bargains to the customers to help them live big and save big at Big Lots,” he said.
There are over 1,500 Big Lots in the United States.
Every other month, Big Lots supports a charity, whether that’s breast cancer, a children’s hospital or mental health awareness.
Parker said, “I think that anytime that you want to be seen as a local, than you need to engage with the locals, and Big Lots with Kevin has made a very strong commitment to ensure that they’re going to be a key member of our community - not just a store, but a place that actually engages with the community to make it a better place for everyone. He’s done an amazing job with this store.”
Big Lots in Warsaw employs about 30 people, Jacobson said.
“The company is growing. The company is innovative. Obviously, you can tell by the design of the new store, it’s not your old-style Big Lots. This is a Big Lots store of the future,” Jacobson said.
Parker said Big Lots was able to find the right people as employees.
Jacobson provided a tour of the store, showcasing the different areas of shopping for customers. The “lot” is the innovative section of the store that has gifts brought to the consumer, and will change throughout the year and change into seasonality type of stuff.
The furnishing department is “pretty strong,” Jacobson said. “We offer value at a good discount to the customers.”
Big Lots sells health and beauty aids, along with cough and cold medicine. There’s domestics, the “soft lines,” home bath, storage, some automotive, a valley of deals, Christmas trees, toys “galore,” four aisles for pets, cleaners, paper goods, home office supplies, food and baking needs, he pointed out.
There are three register lines.
