County fire departments dropped off toys at Martin’s Supermarket Saturday during the annual Toys for Tots collection drive.

Toys for Tots, founded in 1947, is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas.

Members of the Kosciusko County Fireman’s Association staged at JB’s Furniture before parading their 28 trucks with sirens and lights on to Martin’s to drop off the toys that various fire departments collected throughout the county.

Bryce Good, captain of the Seward Township – Burket Fire Department and event coordinator, said each of the 14 departments brought about two fire trucks.

Good said he didn’t know how many toys were collected, but he said Milford and North Webster “really stepped up” bringing trailer loads of toys.

Kevin McSherry, president of the association, said in addition to what was brought to the drive, an additional large trailer of toys that was not unloaded Saturday was being sent straight to the warehouse to be sorted.

The association has been part of Toys for Tots for eight years because the association felt compelled to fill the need it saw and “we wanted to help families around in Warsaw and Kosciusko County,” McSherry said. All 14 fire departments in the association collect toys on their own behalf and then collectively drop them off during the drive.

McSherry said the departments collect toys and money for Toys for Tots yearround. During the Seward Township – Burket Fire Department fish fries this past year, any extra money received went toward Toys for Tots.

Last year, 7,493 toys were distributed and 2,548 children were supported, according to the Toys For Tots website.

McSherry said the benefit of the Toys for Tots program is that it helps every child have a good Christmas.

Good said the association wanted to give back to the community and saw Toys for Tots as a way to do that, noting the fire departments make a friendly competition out of it.
