Warsaw’s (4-2-1, 3-0 NLC) win places them atop the NLC, and Goshen (5-2, 2-1) now sits in second place.
Formidable forwards, senior Riley Burns and freshman Lola Pepper formed the one-two punch in a match expected to be much more competitive. They received plenty of help from their friends in the convincing win.
Burns finished the match with a hat trick (3rd minute, 14’, 57’), and an assist on senior center defender Zoe Bergan’s header goal (43’). Pepper’s contribution, one goal at the tenth minute, and 2 assists, was solid enough to rattle RedHawk defenders as the duo raced downfield throughout the evening.
“Riley Burns was unstoppable tonight,” Tiger head coach Jon Hoover remarked. “She and Lola together when they’re on the same page… it's really difficult with their speed and skill for teams to defend them once they start hitting stride. It's fun to see them play so well, and… having fun doing it.”
Sarah Kratzsch joined the solid team effort assisting Burns’ second goal and added a goal of her own (46’) to move the Tigers ahead 5-0 in the second half before Goshen’s Kennedy Yordy (54’) broke the RedHawks’ schneid.
Warsaw started the match hotter than most of their previous contests, scoring three goals in the first 14 minutes. Hoover was pleased to see his team get over the hump of comparably slower starts among previous frays.
“Something that we've struggled with is the first five to 10 minutes in games,” Hoover said. “We've given up a few goals and unfortunately, we haven't been scoring. For us to get those goals so early on is a big step forward for the program.”
Hoover, somewhat surprised by the early lead over an opposing side the NLC community assumed would contend for the conference title, was able to substitute early, and often. He did not completely platoon groups, though. Every Tiger saw action on the pitch while Hoover blended his most experienced players into the mix.
“It's great to see to see our team healthy,” Hoover said. “We got everyone in that game (to get) a lot of minutes. A lot of teams right now are not in the position that we're in so we're really glad to (have) everyone on the team able to play.
“Everybody get a lot of minutes in. I love seeing the depth. I love seeing them work well together, and they're all smiling so that's a good night.”
Warsaw (4-2-1, 3-0 in the NLC) scored three goals in each half, and they’ll travel tonight to Class 3A #3-ranked Homestead. The two teams’ most recent meeting was the 2021 sectional final at the TSC, a match where Homestead moved on to the regionals with a 4-3 win in the second shootout round.
