Tuesday was a little different as he thanked Cary Groninger, commissioner, and Matt Sandy, Area Plan, for meeting Monday with him and city planners as they met with the project manager from the Indiana Department Of Transportation (INDOT) about the Planning and Environment Linkages (PEL) study for U.S. 30 for about 90 minutes.
“We were able to outline what we had done locally for the past four, five years. We talked about all of our resources, the great resources we have in this county. MACOG. Our engineers and all the work we’ve done and presented pretty much where we stand at this point on this project,” Thallemer said.
He said it was a great kickoff and the public process will be starting. There will be four public meetings, all of which will be announced, he said.
The website for the study of U.S. 30 from Valparaiso to the Indiana/Ohio state line, excluding the Fort Wayne bypass, is at propelus30.com, while the study of U.S. 31 between Hamilton County and Plymouth, excluding the Kokomo bypass, is at propelus31.com. People can leave their comments on the websites.
“I urge everyone to get on the website,” Thallemer said. “They’re also going to have office hours in the county, so if folks have any discussion about the project, they’ll be able to come in and vet that locally.”
He said Monday’s meeting with INDOT was great and he appreciated the collaboration between the city and county for the last five to six years on the potential U.S. 30 limited-access highway.
“We’re getting started. This is going to become a reality at some point,” Thallemer said.
Groninger said the PEL study is about a two-year process and they’ll be studying a total of 180 miles.
“And after that, there’s other processes. We’re just taking this a step at a time,” Thallemer said. “I certainly urge the public to get out, get involved, go to those listening sessions and tell them the same thing we heard at our public meetings here.”
Groninger and Thallemer sit on the U.S. 30 Coalition.
Counties included in the planning and environment linkages (PEL) studies are Allen, Fulton, Hamilton, Howard, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Miami, Porter, Starke, Tipton and Whitley.
During an INDOT-hosted virtual media briefing on Friday, project team member Tim Miller said it will all be a very transparent process for the next 24 months. All the data gathered will be publicly available on the websites. The final report will be available in fall 2024, with the recommended alternatives that would go on for further study.
