Manchester started the game with the ball and didn’t waste any time getting onto the scoreboard. On the first possession of the game, a shot by sophomore Brookelynn Buzzard went off the top of the crossbar and fell perfectly to junior forward Aymia Miller, who headed the ball into an empty net to put the Lady Squires on the board.
The next ten minutes, like a majority of the first half, was paced by Manchester. The Lady Squires seemed to be operating at a different gear, reaching every 50/50 ball, making key tackles and continuously pushing forward.
Despite a total of six first-half shots on goal, the Wawasee defense would hold Manchester out of the back of the net for the remainder of the first half. Offensively, the Warriors struggled to get much going. A couple of nice solo runs by sophomore forward Morgan Reel and midfielder Molly Beer got the ball into the final third, but were ultimately foiled.
Wawasee’s two biggest chances in the first 40 minutes came after the 13-minute mark. A perfectly placed cross made way for a real opportunity, but the shot was ultimately sent away by Manchester junior keeper Grace Smith. A few minutes later Smith showed off her defensive prowess again by making a leaping save with her finger tips on a long shot.
Reel would have the last real chance of the first half with about five minutes left, but her shot was blocked by sophomore defender Addison Brubaker.
After momentum swung toward the Warrior direction at the end of the first half, Manchester took it back at the beginning of the second. Five minutes into the second 40 minutes of play, the Lady Squires were awarded a free kick near the goalie box. After a small tap from London Spangle, Campbell Bolinger buried the shot from distance to double the Manchester lead. A minute and a half later, Brookelynn Buzzard would score unassisted to make it 3-0.
The Warriors would come on strong in the final 20 minutes of the game, possessing the ball for a majority of it. But whether the shot was just off target or the final lead pass was just a bit too far in front, Wawasee was unable to get onto the scoreboard. Manchester keeper Grace Smith would finish with six saves.
Wawasee has a quick turnaround, taking on Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday. Manchester travels to Converse to face off with Oak Hill Thursday.
