WINONA LAKE - Grace’s women’s soccer team began the 2022 campaign by collecting their first win of the year.

The NAIA No. 24-ranked Lady Lancers took down Indiana Tech 2-0 in a complete performance in front of a packed stadium at 1st Source Bank Field.

Grace possessed the ball calmly and confidently in the opening minutes, setting the tone for the rest of the match. The hosts created a few chances and two corner kicks in the early going.

JJ Aalbue opened the season’s scoring a little over 10 minutes into the match. The senior roamed down the left side of the field, cut across a defender and lashed a hard shot that Tech’s goalkeeper could not handle.

The Lady Lancers continued to threaten Tech’s side of the field, peppering the goal with 17 shot attempts.

Aalbue had a few more chances in the half, including a low slice that hit the goalpost. Madison Tuma, Danae Moriarty and Lea Moessinger also had multiple tries at the Warriors’ goal in the half.

Grace had a 17-1 advantage in shot attempts, and the Lady Lancers led 1-0 at halftime.

The story was much the same to begin the second half. Grace kept the ball for the majority of the time and had a myriad of goal-scoring chances.

The Lady Lancers did not struggle to create offensive moments in the second half; Grace had 10 shots after halftime to go along with five corner kicks.

Shannon Farnsworth had a shot that hit the goalpost with 16 minutes remaining in the match, and she also had a pass that nearly set up another goal to Moriarty.

The final goal came in the final minutes of the match. Grace built up its possession through the middle of the field.

Aalbue advanced the ball with a pass to Moessinger, who quickly redirected a ball wide to Moriarty. Moriarty’s cross into the penalty box came to Janni Bettin, and Bettin beat the goalkeeper with her shot into the net in the 85th minute.

The Warriors were limited to one shot in each half, and the visitors did not have a corner kick.

Libby Stratton picked up the shutout in goal with one save in 90 minutes. She was protected well by the backline of Amber Meade, Lucy Schmitt, Luna Gianotti, Kimberly Aalbue and Erin Crew.

The Lady Lancers remain home on Saturday, hosting Ohio Christian at 7 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.
