Warsaw Baseball Hires Former Cub
Warsaw Baseball's new pitching coach and game management director knows what it takes to pitch at the highest level.
He knows because he did it himself.
In a story on the school’s athletic department website, www.warsaw-tigers.com, Tiger Baseball announced it has hired former Chicago Cub pitcher Bryan Hickerson to replace Adam Augustine, who resigned this summer to spend more time with his family.
Hickerson was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 9th round of the 1985 amateur draft, but did not sign with them. He was draft by the Twins in the 7th round the following year.
He made his big-league debut in 1991 with the Giants, and made 32 appearances for the Cubs in 1995.
Hickerson currently works as the Director of Sports & Recreation at the YMCA in Warsaw.
"I reached out to Bryan to see if he was even remotely interested as he thought it was a long shot to get some of Bryan's caliber to help coach at Warsaw," Tiger Baseball Coach Andy Manes says.
He didn't have to do much arm-twisting.
"I love athletics, I grew up with it, especially baseball. My entire family played sports. Love being part of a team," Hickerson says. "I love impacting young lives and seeing lives changed through athletics."
He'll have the chance to do exactly that as the new pitching coach at Warsaw.
