Local Pastor John Lowe II Returns To Poland In Aid To Ukraine

Six weeks ago, Pastor John B. Lowe II, of New Life Christian Church and World Outreach, was in Warsaw, Poland, helping Ukrainian refugees with food, clothing and financial aid to help with relocation costs after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Thursday afternoon, Lowe departed for Poland again with a different sort of aid to assist in the crisis.

This time, he’s taking 23 sets of body armor and other assorted military-grade equipment, filters to clean up to 1,500 gallons of water and more supplies to the Polish capital.

At least 10 sets of the body armor are earmarked for pastors of churches in Ukraine who are in relationship with New Life.

“These pastors have been going from Ukraine to Poland, getting supplies such as food, clothing and medicine, and bringing it back into their home areas,” Lowe said. “The gear is specifically designed to protect and save lives, not kill or injure people. These pastors are, in fact, risking their lives; going through territory where safety cannot be guaranteed, and I feel the least we can do is to help them protect themselves while they serve the people of their country.”

The filters were purchased in a joint effort with World Compassion Network, which is based locally. The filters come with 1-gallon bags for transporting the clean water.

“The 1-gallon size makes it easier to carry. Anything less and families would need more than one,” Lowe said. “And as anyone knows who’s picked up one, a five-gallon container, or anything bigger, is just hard to carry over any kind of distance.”

What’s Next?

A winter clothing drive has already been successful enough that a shipping container has been filled, and will be shipped to Poland in the coming weeks.

Donations of clean, gently used clothes, coats, gloves, socks and boots for both children and adults have been made, with a significant portion donated by Mission Point Church.

“We figure it’ll take six months for the container to arrive by boat,” Lowe said. “It feels a little strange to have a coat drive in April, but it takes a while to get it over there by boat.”

Greg Rauen, executive director of World Compassion Network, said, “We expect this will be a long, drawn-out war, and I’d ask people to keep informed as to what’s going on. I’m sure we’ll ask for more donations soon, but obviously we want to fill needs not only in the short term, but we’ll be anticipating what needs will be into the future.”
