MENTONE - Three retiring Mentone Elementary teachers were recognized at the Tippecanoe Valley School Board meeting Monday: math/literacy coach Patti Newman, music teacher Tana Tinky and second-grade teacher Alisa Baker.

The Board planned on recognizing retiring Mentone Elementary first-grade teacher Pam Sellers, but she did not attend the meeting. Superintendent Blaine Conley said Sellers has worked at Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation for 21 years as a teacher.

At the end of the school year, with the four retiring teachers, Mentone Elementary will have 102 years of teaching experience “walking out the door,” Conley said.

Newman has 36 years in education. She started her career  teaching fifth grade. After five years, she went to teach third grade, which she taught for 16 years, according to information read by Conley. When Newman went to teach third grade, she replaced her mother, who retired. Newman’s mother loved to say she grew her own replacement.

She taught two years of fourth grade and then became a math coach for five. She was then an instructional coach for eight years. In 2020, Newman spent a semester as an eLearning instructor.

One of the aspects of teaching Newman said she enjoyed was the students. She also enjoyed the people she worked with.

Newman said she’s going to miss the every day of working with students but is looking forward to relaxing, traveling and having more time with family, including her husband, four children and their spouses, seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Baker has 31 years in education, all at TVSC. She spent the first five years in primary and secondary special education at Akron Elementary and Tippecanoe Valley Middle School. She taught first grade for 13 years and 13 years teaching second grade at Mentone Elementary.

What Baker finds most rewarding is the growth her students make as they progress during the school year. She also feels honored to have former students become colleagues.

Baker said she’s going to miss the caring and family-like environment at Mentone Elementary. She plans to travel with her husband and enjoy life.

Tinky has 33 years in education, 32 of those are at TVSC. Conley said Tinky has taught in each school building, either as a full-time teacher or as a substitute.

Seeing former students as responsible adults is what she finds most rewarding. She will miss watching students realize they can play an instrument and overall enjoy music.

What she is looking forward to most is being available for family.

In other business, the Board:

• Approved the contract renewal of the 2022-23 girls varsity volleyball coach, varsity football coach and girls varsity basketball coach.

• Approved the 2022 summer school calendar. There will be one session for elementary and middle school students on June 6-10, 14-17, 21-24 and 28-30. The high school session will be July 11-29.

• Approved the 2022 mathematics curriculum.
