Extra Ingredients Lead To Warsaw Weekend Track & Field Win

Warsaw’s pole vaulters’ time had finally arrived. The team usually had one standout athlete among the program’s most recent seasons, but Saturday three vaulters showcased solid depth to finished first for a combined height of 35 feet to capture first place. Morgan Johnson (13-00, third individually) and Tucker Curtis (12-00, fifth), and sophomore Matt Marsh (10-00, eighth) demonstrated how essential each individual finish is for relay invitational success.
Field event relays were scored for the combined efforts among each team’s three participants.
Ashton Wade (18-09.5, fifth) joined Koontz (18-09.25 sixth), and Curtis (18-08, seventh) also demonstrated the value of depth in the meet’s format by leaping their collective way into second place in the long jump with a combined distance of 55-14.75.
The senior throwing trio of Noah Chew, Trace Stookey, and Kyler Denney combined their efforts for first place finishes in the shot put and discus. Chew’s 50-02 shot put heave, the meet’s best individual throw by four feet, will have his Northern Lakes opponents’ collective eye on him when conference dual meet action starts this week.
The Tigers throwers combined for distances of 128-07 in the shot put, and 370-11 in the discus.
Warsaw’s 4 X 400-meter relay team of Colton Martin, Nathan Dailey, Andrew Frush, and Jeremy Johnson delivered Warsaw’s fourth blue-ribbon performance with a 3:35.35 finish.
Warsaw hurdlers earned second place in the 4 X 110m shuttle hurdle relay (1:02.27) and the 300m hurdles combined performance (2:12.84).
The shuttle hurdle relay team was comprised of Blake Keene, Frush, Ian Nichols, and Aiden Woods while Woods, Frush, and Keene contributed to the 300m combined effort.
Three Tiger relay teams, the 4 X 200m, 4 X 800m, and the distance medley (1200m-400m-800m-1600m) picked up third place finishes.
Haydin Rodriguez, Bryson Brown, Wade, and Drew Heckaman sprinted to 1:35.97 in the 4 X 200m relay. Nat Knecht, Sam Slough, Andrew Potter, and Gabe Klein covered eight laps in 8:57.39. Luke Nier, Colton Martin, Jeremy Johnson, and Garrett Hall turned in an 11:15.20 distance medley finish.
Nier, Hall, and Slough were joined by Tyler Swartz in a 19:33.47 effort good enough for fourth place in the 4 X 1600m relay.
The Tigers added a fifth-place finish in the sprint medley relay (100m-100m-200m-400m) with the combined efforts of Brown, Heckaman, Koontz, and Morgan Johnson.
Warsaw opens NLC dual meet action Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. in Mishawaka.
