Wawasee at Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY – Wawasee emerged victorious in a battle of two coverage area teams on the baseball diamond Tuesday, defeating Whitko 5-0. The Warriors pick up their first win of the season and move to 1-1. The Wildcats fall to 2-1.

Wawasee pitcher Grant Brooks was fantastic on the mound, striking out 14 batters in seven innings. The Butler commit allowed only one base runner on a walk, finishing with a no hitter. Whitko hurler Riley Harmon was valiant in defeat, striking out 10 batters in four innings.

Both Wawasee and Whitko play their next contests Thursday, with the Warriors headed to Columbia City and the Wildcats hosting Lakewood Park.



Bluffton at Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester Squires are still searching for their first win of the season after falling to Bluffton 13-5 Tuesday evening. Manchester falls to 0-2 on the young season.

Sophomore Gavin Martin led the team offensively, getting on base three times with two hits and a walk. Martin also swiped a bag while on the bases. Ethan Espeset struck out four batters in three innings, but also walked five.

Manchester plays its next game Friday at Eastern.



SOFTBALL

Southern Wells at Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY – Whitko softball had a great outing to start its season Tuesday night, thrashing Southern Wells 22-2 in five innings. The Lady ‘Cats are now 1-0.

Maddie Dafforn got the win on the mound with six strikeouts, giving up two runs in three innings. Guinny Garr and Cassidy Skinner each had a double. Ella Walter and Audra Brandenburg each hit two singles.

Whitko travels to Columbia City for its next contest Friday night.



Columbia City at Wawasee

SYRACUSE – Wawasee gave up seven runs in the first three innings and was only able to score one to answer in a 11-1 loss to Columbia City Tuesday. The Warriors are now 1-3 this spring.

Wawasee’s lone run came in the fourth when Laney Gross drove in Jaclynn Worrell. The Warriors will try to bounce back Friday against Manchester.



Triton at Plymouth

PLYMOUTH – Triton picked up its second win of the young season with a tight 2-0 victory over Plymouth Tuesday. The Lady Trojans are now 2-3 this spring.

Erin Ogle led the team’s offense with three hits. Madeline Doll had two hits and an RBI. Lena Doll was fantastic on the mound, allowing only three hits and striking out nine over seven shutout innings.

Triton plays its next game Thursday when it hosts Goshen.



TRACK

North Miami/Whitko/Lakeland Christian at Tippecanoe Valley

AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley held host to a meet featuring a few other coverage area teams Tuesday night, with a variety of athletes earning praise.

For Tippecanoe Valley, it finished in first place in the event on the boys side with 76 points, and second on the girls side with 45. Senior Dawson Perkins won the high jump event, with teammate Eric Burke taking second. Chesnee Miller won the girls long jump and two mile events.

Whitko finished in first place on the girls side with 50 points, led by freshman Emerson Harper who won all four of her track events for a clean sweep. Senior Melaina Fugate won three hurdle events and freshman Gwen Howard took first in the shot put.

For Lakeland Christian, two school records were broken and one was tied. Hunter Rice set a school record in boys shot put, while Landon Gause set a record in the high jump. On the girls side, Lani Calizo tied the school high jump record.
