WINONA LAKE – Since 2009, approximately 55,000 pounds of apples have been picked at the Community Apple Orchard, 1800 E. Pierceton Road.

In 2013, during a “super harvest,” 31,000 pounds picked, according to information provided from the Community Apple Orchard Corporation.

The business was established March 31, 2010, as a 501(c)3 and is operated by a five-member board. The property is owned by Grace College.

Since 2009, approximately 31,700 pounds of apples have been donated to the needy. The largest donation was 3,000 pounds to the Community Harvest Food in Fort Wayne in 2013.

The most apples picked by a group was by Warsaw Christian School. In fall 2013, the school picked 1,800 pounds of apples.

The nonprofit has purchased two large, hand-operated cider presses. They’re free ot use, but apples must be picked at the Community Apple Orchard.

For 2021, vouchers for the orchard are available at Combined Community Services, which will allow you to pick up to two bushels (84 pounds) for free. As of Friday, there have been 14 vouchers received this year, with a total of 1,038 pounds donated through CCS vouchers.

This year, the most apples picked by a group was 575 pounds by Right to Life of North Central Indiana on Sept. 18. These apples were donated to Our Father’s House (175 pounds) and Kokomo Rescue Mission (400 pounds).

The orchard is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 9. Gleaning day is Oct. 9 when people can pick for free, but apples must be weighed before a person leaves with them. Price is 50 cents per pound.

Until Oct. 9, a person can pick for free if they pick an equivalent amount of apples to donate to the needy.

Parking is on the west side of the orchard.

Call 574-551-0117 to pick at other times through Oct. 8.

Cider presses will be available on Saturdays and for larger groups as the orchard is able to accommodate.
