“We want our kids to get better and use any experience to get better,” said Tigers coach Bart Curtis after watching his team score on its first six offensive possessions before taking a knee on the seventh at the end of the game. “A lot of kids got to play tonight. We were efficient on offense. Defensively we bent a little, but then rose up.”
Associated Press/Indiana Football Coaches Association Class 6A poll vote-getter Warsaw held Goshen to 10 yards rushing and yielded 108 passing (90 by Quinn Bechtel and 18 by Deecon Hill).
A pair of interceptions — one each by Corbin Johnston and Aiden Binkerd — set up touchdown drives for the Tigers in the third quarter.
After a 22-yard pass from Curtis Tucker to Julius Jones at 9:18 of the third period made it 28-0 in Warsaw’s first second-half possession, Johnston’s pick led to a three-play march punctuated by Tucker’s 3-yard TD run at 6:18 of the third.
At 35-0, the running clock rule went into effect.
There were 45 seconds to go in the third quarter when Jayce Sawyer scored on a 13-yard run on the fourth play after Binkerd’s interception. With Mason Smythe’s sixth extra point of the night, the Tigers led 42-0.
“We held them to zero points, which I think is very, very good,” said Curtis. “The goal-line stand right before half was huge.
“Overall, I’m very pleased.”
The RedHawks were stopped inside the Warsaw 10 on a drive that started at the Goshen 34 and featured three Bechtel pass completions.
Warsaw led 21-0 at halftime. Each of three first-half drives concluded with a TD run by German Flores-Ortega (8, 4 and 7 yards).
After stopping Goshen on downs at the Warsaw 22 on the game’s first series, the Tigers took seven plays to end up in the end zone at 4:44 of the first quarter. The drive featured runs of 41 and 11 yards by Jones.
After a Goshen punt, Warsaw took six plays to score again at 11:24 of the second quarter. Jones (37 yards) and Bryson Brown (15 yards) had big runs for the Tigers.
Another RedHawks punt preceded a 10-play scoring march by Warsaw. Jones had runs of 19 and 13 yards during the drive. Flores-Ortega pounded for the TD at 5:03 of the second period.
Led by Jones (five carries for 121 yards) and Flores-Ortega (17 carries for 90 yards), the Tigers gained 356 of 378 total yards on the ground. All but one of Warsaw’s 15 first downs came via the run.
Goshen came out with the opening series and moved the ball to the Tigers 22 before giving the ball up on downs.
“I was pleased with how we started the game with those first five or six plays we were moving the chains,” said RedHawks coach Kyle Park. “We hadn’t done that all year. That’s been a point of emphasis. We finally got over that hump.”
In the 69th meeting of the two programs, Warsaw (5-1, 4-0) beat Goshen (2-4, 0-4 NLC) pulled to within 34-32-2 in the series and won for the 14th straight time.
The Tigers were flagged for 11 penalties.
“We do some things that need to be corrected that are going to cost us,” said Curtis. “Those are plays where it’s just a mental lapse or something that is not intelligent football-wise.”
Because of low numbers for Goshen, the junior varsity game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25 has been canceled.
On Friday, Oct. 1, Wawasee visits Warsaw and Goshen goes to Northidge.
