Successful athletic teams don’t gain satisfaction from losses, and they won’t use the term moral victory. The Warsaw Tigers girls’ soccer team instead used the recent three games in six hot days to learn more about themselves, most recently in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Mishawaka Marian Knights.

The Tigers used the recent games from Monday, Thursday, and Saturday to do two things: to simulate the postseason schedule format for the upcoming sectional, and to bring players off the bench for meaningful minutes to be ready when called upon in a postseason crunch.

“We rolled through a lot of players today,” Warsaw head coach John Hoover noted. “A lot of people came off the bench and put in some really good minutes.”

The week’s game schedule against three fast-moving opponents also exploited the host side’s fatigue.

The Tigers drew first blood with a goal from junior Bonnie Hampton, assisted by fellow classmate Rylee Burns at the eleventh minute of the 80-minute match. The Tigers took that 1-nil lead when they departed the pitch for halftime.

The second half, however, was when the fatigue quickly set in on Warsaw.

Marian substituted its sprinters early in the first half, and the Knights’ fresh starters exploited the Tigers’ fatigue in the second half.

“We knew it would take two goals to win this game,” Hoover said. “Trying to keep up with (Marian) in the second half was difficult because of the condition of our legs.”

“We definitely hit a state of fatigue,” Hoover continued, “But we’re not going to make excuses because this is all training for postseason.”

Marian’s Addie Schade knotted the score at one apiece with a goal at the 47th minute.

Near the 71st minute, however, some inconsistency in officiating hurt the Tigers on the defensive end, and it was Marian who scored the second goal Hoover mentioned as essential to winning the match.

Warsaw defender Jordan Love went for the opponent’s dribble in a manner that would have been as equally physical, if not even less physical than the trips and collisions Tiger midfielder Corissa Koontz was experiencing from Marian defenders throughout the match.

Love, however, was issued a yellow card for a trip instead of play continuing from incidental contact.

The Knights in the following two minutes, took advantage of the Tigers’ defensive setup against a corner kick and scored a beautiful goal by Quinn Pankiewicz at the 73rd minute on an assist from JoJo Murphy, who received the inbound corner kick.

The Tigers will use an entire week to rest and apply lessons learned from their recent two losses before returning to conference play when they travel to Wawasee Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
