On Wednesday, September 15, Kosciusko County Health Officer Dr. William Remington participated in a news conference. His remarks could be summarized by the following headline: "Remington Applauds Warsaw Schools Mask Mandate.”

A full refutation of Dr. Remington's comments would consume a great deal of newsprint. However, there are more general principles involved in this issue, which deserve the attention of Kosciusko County readers.

The comments and actions of the county health officer illustrate disregard for both the principles of the Hippocratic Oath and the foundational concepts of liberty involved in the genesis of these United States. I submit that we must look back to the time of the Founders in order to seek guidance for our present situation.

More specifically, I call the readers' attention to Founder James Otis, Jr. In 1761, he resigned his post as crown prosecutor in order to defend several Boston merchants against the hated Stamp Act. His five-hour oration before the court was attended by quite a number of other Founders, and it was that event that sparked the liberty movement in the colonies. He had a statement in those times that still rings true today. He maintained that people who oppose liberty do so for one or more of three basic reasons: "guilt, malice or folly." Translated into modern American English, this maxim becomes "pragmatism, malice or ignorance."

This statement is the yardstick by which all public officials should be judged, and that is especially true for Kosciusko County Health Officer Dr. William Remington. So, Dr. Remington, why do you oppose our God-given natural rights and liberties? Is your motivation "pragmatism, malice or ignorance?"

In any case, the remedy is clear. Dr. Remington should either resign or be impeached and removed from office. In these times we cannot tolerate arbitrary and capricious governmental dictates. No, more than ever, the citizens of Kosciusko County and the sovereign state of Indiana and these United States of America need to return to basics and demand the Constitution solution.
