Burns Hat Trick Nets Tigers Senior Night 3-0 Win
September 15, 2021 at 12:30 a.m.
Teammates, parents, and fans honored eight seniors on the Warsaw Tigers girls’ soccer team in pregame festivities on the Monday night. Junior Rylee Burns continued the tribute in the evening’s action with a hat trick for Warsaw in their 3-0 non-conference win over the Fort Wayne Northrup Bruins.
The Tiger fan base was treated to a display of athleticism, or quick thinking among each of Burns’s three goals. Sometimes both.
The Warsaw forward’s first goal at 10 minutes (of the 80-minute match) was a rebound off senior midfielder Same Aalbue’s air-catching header where Burns immediately, and powerfully found the net, drawing first blood for the victors.
A tightly packed strike of Tigers was positioned at the goal at 26 minutes when a kick from the outside left had touches from junior Macy Wayne, and senior Corissa Koontz before Burns found the back right corner of the net for Burns’s second goal. Wayne and Koontz were awarded a double assist.
The hat trick goal was a powerful, athletic one-on-one clash when Burns fired a high kick from the left side of the 18-meter line at 56 minutes. Northup athletic goalkeeper Kayden Tassler sprung high in the air to deflect the ball, but her contact with the ball wasn’t enough to deflect, nor even slow down the kick.
“Her speed is really hard for defenders to keep up with,” Tiger head coach Jon Hoover said. “Bonnie (Hampton) has scored a few goals from the right outside, so when you pick up your outside game and they try to cover that we get some great attacks from our (midfielders).”
Hoover was well-aware of the strong overall team effort citing the way his midfielders opened the pitch on offense, and the efficiency of his team’s passing.
“We made some runs today I’ve been waiting to see us make,” Hoover noted. “The midfield stretched (Northrup) a little bit. I thought Corissa, and Sam made some runs out wide that opened things up for us.”
The Tiger mentor was also pleased with a solid defense against the 6-2 Summit City guests. Junior defender Zoe Bergan’s late-game stop of Bruin midfielder Lydia Herald’s run toward the goal to preserve the shutout. The Bruins had two shots on goal the entire evening.
The eight seniors honored were Aalbue, Izzy Bradley, Megan DeBoest, Kate Deloe, Koontz, Valeria Marquez, Kiersten Parker, and Kaina Voss.
Warsaw, currently on a four-game win streak moved to 8-4 overall, host Penn Thursday night 7:00 p.m. in the fourth game of a five-game homestand.
