Mother Nature Cries “Enough!”, Tigers Notch 6-0 NLC Win
September 8, 2021 at 12:19 a.m.
The Warsaw girls’ soccer team raced to a 6-0 lead at the completion of the first half of Tuesday’s home soccer match when lightning immediately struck after the match’s 40th minute. Officials and coaches from both teams met briefly, and subsequently decided to call the match with the final score standing 6-0 over the Mishawaka Cavemen.
The Tigers’ second consecutive win moves them to 6-4 overall, and to 3-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC).
“It was great to see our team play with their legs finally under them,” Warsaw head coach Jon Hoover said of his abridged, but convincing win. “Our schedule has been going non-stop for weeks now, so the holiday weekend came at just the right time.”
The game’s start was proactively moved up earlier in the day to a 5:30 p.m. start due to the thunderstorm system headed toward the Michiana area. Two other NLC matches were postponed during mid-day.
Mishawaka, overmatched from the outset, doubled its troubles by surrendering three of the six goals scored upon them courtesy of penalty kicks.
Corissa Koontz (10th minute), Sam Aalbue (12th minute), and Abby Kohler (21st minute) all capitalized on Cavemen fouls near the goal.
The aforementioned goals by seniors Koontz, and Aalbue were followed by two more goals coming in the next set of two-minute tranches by Junior Bonnie Hampton (14th, 16th minutes). Koontz had assists on each of those goals.
“Corissa Koontz is making everyone around her better,” Hoover said of his senior midfielder. “(She’s) demanding attention from opponents.”
Hampton’s classmate, Rylee Burns punctuated the evening’s scoring with a goal at the 39th minute from an assist by Aalbue.
“Sam Aalbue can play any position on the field so well,” Hoover remarked. “(She) has been a force offensively and defensively for this group”
The junior varsity match, moved to the later start time, was cancelled after the second strike of lightning shortly following the 30-minute mark after the evening’s first strike.
Warsaw returns to the pitch of the Tiger Soccer Complex for the second and third matches of their current five-match homestand with a Thursday NLC match against Concord (7:00 p.m.), followed by Senior Night against Fort Wayne Northrup Monday, September 13 (7:30 p.m.).
