ARGOS - Warsaw girls soccer coach Jon Hoover couldn’t have described the situation any better.

“We found a way.”

That’s how Hoover described junior Rylee Burns’ goal in the 70th minute Saturday at Eugene Snyder Field, a score that lifted the Lady Tigers to a 4-3 win over the host Argos Lady Dragons and allowed them to snap a three-match losing streak.

“It was one of those things where it wasn’t the prettiest, but the group was kind of scratching and clawing,” said Hoover, whose team held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 before the score was tied 3-3 at halftime.

“We had a lot of chances late, and I think the players worked really hard to get in the right place. I think it deflected a few times, and we were able to tuck it in the net.

“They worked really hard to get into position. Our touch was not great today, but I think they made up for it with effort, and a goal like that, it wasn’t beautiful, but we found a way.”

The Lady Tigers improved to 5-4, while Argos fell to 5-2-1.

Burns put Warsaw up 1-0 just three minutes into the 80-minute match, and then classmate Zoe Bergen doubled the visitors’ advantage with a goal in the 12th minute.

Hoover said he was hoping for a better start Saturday, something his team has struggled with.

“We came out really well. Our last couple games, the first five minutes have been rough,” said Hoover. “I was pleased with how we started the game.

“Playing Argos at Argos is always tough. We wanted to take the fight out early, but after we went up 2-0 we made a mistake and gave them life. And a team like that, that is well-coached, they took it and ran with it and made it a game the rest of the way.”

Argos sophomore Lillian Hines put her team on the scoreboard in the 30th minute, cutting Warsaw’s advantage to 2-1.

The Lady Tigers responded with a goal by junior Kiana Rager four minutes later to restore a two-goal lead, but the hosts got a goal from junior Emma Dunlap in the 35th minute, and another from Hines in the 39th minute to knot things at 3-3 heading into halftime.

“Kudos to them for not backing down and really coming at us,” Hoover said of the Lady Dragons. “We played really well in flashes, and then we made some pretty costly mistakes. I think we kind of need to as a team clean some of that up, and we’ll be OK.”

The Lady Tigers are in action again Tuesday when they host Northern Lakes Conference opponent Mishawaka.
