NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester High School football was back on the practice field Tuesday for the first time in five days — about an hour or so after learning of an opponent change, too.

The Squires, after being forced to cancel their game last week against Bluffton under COVID protocols, will now host Class 1A No. 10-ranked Winamac on Friday instead of Wabash.

“It’s been a crazy whirlwind the last couple days,” Manchester coach Alyx Brandewie said Tuesday night. “On Sunday, we were told (by Wabash) that ‘we might have some issues, but we think we’ll be OK.’ Then on Monday, they said they couldn’t play and we started looking for a replacement. We thought we had one lined up, and then they backed out this morning.”

Then the Squires and Warriors struck their deal.

“I got the thumbs up at about 2:30 today that we could go ahead and plan on that,” Brandewie said.

Wabash pulled out of Friday’s matchup due to “health and safety reasons,” Brandewie said. “They didn’t officially say it was (COVID), so I can’t say that, but it was health and safety.”

The Squires were missing one position group entirely last week under COVID protocols that included contact tracing, leading to the cancellation of the Bluffton game.

They conducted abbreviated practices of one hour each on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with their remaining players, then did not practice again until this Tuesday.

Between contact tracing and other individuals being sidelined due to being “banged up anyway,” Manchester was missing “about a dozen guys” during last week’s workouts, according to Brandewie.

“I think we’re going to be OK,” Brandewie said of whether he’ll have everybody back by Friday. “We’ve got just a couple guys out until (Wednesday), so I think we’ll be good to go.”

In 2-0 Winamac, the Squires will host a team coming off a 7-3 sectional-title season last fall. The Warriors were 35-14 winners at 3A Knox in Week 1, then followed up with a 38-6 home win Friday over Pioneer, a game that happened to be the Panthers’ first-ever league  loss spanning seven seasons in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference.
