The Tigers will take to their home pitch as sectional hosts in Saturday’s 7:00 p.m. with intent on avenging their 4-0 regular season loss the Spartans September 2.
“It was good to see us move the ball quickly,” Warsaw head coach Jon Hoover said. “Our second set of eleven players moved the ball as well as the first eleven. They stayed within our system.”
“We’ll watch a lot of film. We came out of this game healthy so we’re good,” Hoover continued in his discussion about preparing for the state’s second-ranked Homestead squad.” The longer we keep that game zero-to-zero the better off we are. We are excited to go into that game to create problems for (Homestead).”
Sam Aalbue scored the only goal Warsaw needed at the 8th minute mark of the match shortened to 63 minutes due to the IHSAA mercy rule. The Tigers, however, weren’t through adding five more goals in to mount a 6-0 halftime lead.
Tiger defender, junior Jordan Love scored on an assist by Abbi Kohler (10th minute), The Generals kicked an “own-goal” at the 11th minute, and another eight minutes elapsed before the Tigers scored again when Rylee Burns found the net followed by Aalbue’s second goal from an assist by Love at the 23rd minute. Abbi Kohler’s close-range goal off a rebound at 36 minutes accounted for the victors’ sixth goal.
Four minutes into the second half Bonnie Hampton found the net off Zoe Bergan’s corner kick. Thirteen minutes later Sarah Kratzsch put the Tigers further ahead 8-0 (59th minute). Defender Taylon Chastain scored the ninth and final goal at the 63rd minute immediately ending the contest due to the Mercy rule.
Love, Kratzsch, and Chastain don’t ordinarily make the books for goals. The Tigers were able to make this possible because of their offensive formations affording them an advantage by confusing opponents who try to defend Warsaw’s players according to their conventional positions.
“We like to have our team not play positions as long as our defenders charge back when they go on runs,” Hoover noted. “We’re forcing other teams to think about who they defend. When we can do that, we’re a tough team to defend.”
Admission to Saturday’s 7:00 p.m. sectional final at the Tiger Soccer Complex is $6.00 per person.
