It was the Tigers’ third consecutive shared/outright NLC soccer title.
The Tigers scored each of their goals in the early minutes of each half. Corissa Koontz (fourth minute) scored on an assist from Kiersten Parker, and Sam Aalbue (43rd minute) scored from 30 meters out to put the Tigers up 2-0 against a frustrated Raiders side.
“Our team did a great job spacing today,” Tiger head coach Jon Hoover said. “A lot of that caused (Northridge) some frustration when (they’re) chasing and not knowing whose responsibility it was to cover defensively.”
Spreading out the field contributed to the space afforded Koontz and Aalbue, the Tigers’ senior midfielders, who scored Warsaw’s goals.
“We had a lot of speed out in the whip tonight,” Hoover continued. “It allowed us to stretch out the middle for players like Corissa and Sam, Macy (Wayne), and Abby (Kohler).”
Northridge scored at the 70th minute in the 80-minute fray, but late in the game the Raiders lacked the sense of urgency on possession changes to rally for a tie score, much to the audible and visible frustration of their fans.
The Tigers drew a bye in the five-team Class 3A sectional their school will host Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Warsaw will face the Fort Wayne Anthony Wayne Generals Thursday with a 5 p.m. start time.
The other tournament competitors are Fort Wayne South Side, Homestead, and Huntington North. Homestead, who beat Warsaw 4-0 in early September, is on the opposite side of the bracket from the Tigers. Hoover and his squad, however, are not looking ahead to a rematch with the Spartans.
“We need to celebrate (the NLC title) tonight, but then we need to get right back to work for the second season. We have Homestead on the other side of the bracket, but we are focused on Thursday (Wayne).”
Warsaw enters the tournament in a very favorable physical state.
“In the middle of the season we had a long stretch of a lot of games in a short amount of time,” Hoover noted regarding his team’s overall health. “A lot of players came off the bench in that stretch playing big minutes, so we’re physically in a great place. It’s exciting to see us not carrying a lot of injuries into the postseason.”
