By Chip Davenport-
“The more dents the farther (a golf ball) flies’” Krebs said. “Today’s a dent, but it will allow us to fly farther.”
Krebs, who teeters a blend of gametime patience and practice impatience, is not pressing the panic button although the Tiger offense struggled in the Tiger Den Tuesday night. The Thanksgiving break affords the Tigers a chance to regroup and resume full speed preparing for conference play next week.
“We are gonna take two days off, relax and eat,” Krebs noted. “We’ll get back to work Friday, and I’m gonna break out the garbage cans and see who runs to them first.”
“I’m not in a panic right now,” Krebs continued. “We have too much heart and too much fight. It’s just a dent.”
The Tigers struggled from the field throughout most of their 32 minutes of action last night, with a barren 6-24 (25%) shooting night including one of twelve (8%) attempts beyond the three-point arc.
The Warsaw defense held Penn to 17 points below the season scoring average, and Krebs views this as one of the game’s takeaways.
“We’re going to find something to be thankful for,” the Tiger skipper said. “Defensively you tell me I’m going to give up 37 points to Penn, I’d take my check and do some betting.”
The Tigers only streak was a 7-0 run after falling behind 8-0 in the opening quarter. Abby Sanner had four points in the run, and a team- and game-leading 12 points for the evening. Kacilyn Krebs hit the hosts’ only three-pointer in that run, closing to within a single point before Sidney Little’s put back from an offensive rebound closed out the quarter to give her Kingsmen a 10-7 lead.
Warsaw was 2-8 (25%) from the field in that opening frame, and consistently shot a paltry 25% each quarter thereafter.
“We are struggling offensively but we’re trying to find our identity,” Krebs said. “We are trying to get a new offense in. We’re just not good with the ball in our hands. We ran a lot of ball screens in the past, but I don’t think that’s going to work for us right now.”
Penn nudged its lead by an additional point in the second and third periods, taking leads of 17-13 and 24-19 from outscoring Warsaw 7-6 in two consecutive quarters.
Penn’s Jada Patton scored six of her eight points on the night in the final period as Penn widened their lead to 35-23 before closing out their 37-26 victory.
The Kingsmen bolstered their record to 5-2 with a balanced scoring attack, with Sydney Little leading the way with ten points. Payton Adkins came off the bench to sink two shots beyond the arc and finished with eight tallies for the evening. Jessalyn Troy added the only other three-pointer for Penn and finished with five points for the guests.
The Kingsmen shot 46.7% from the field (14-30), but only 25% from three-point range, but did further damage scoring nine second-chance points from 14 offensive rebounds. They toppled Warsaw 27-19 in the battle of the boards.
Warsaw’s Sanner was aided by Bailie Stephens’s nine points, followed by Krebs’s three tallies, and Abby Peterson’s two points from the charity stripe. The Tigers were much more impressive from the free throw line, connecting 13 of 15 attempts (86.7%). Sanner wiped the glass clean with seven rebounds, four of those caroms form the offensive glass.
The JV Tigers fell 27-26 to Penn, and their record moves to 4-3.
The Tigers’ recent stretch of games against Merrillville and Class 4A #1 Crown Point last Saturday, and last night’s clash with the Kingsmen were suitable preparation for Warsaw’s Northern Lakes Conference opener Tuesday Nov 30 in the Tiger Den.
