Edgewood Middle School  is in the process of applying to become certified as a STEM school, Principal JoElla Hauselman told the Warsaw School Board Monday.

Hauselman said the team of people she had with her to present to the Board was “to show to become STEM certified is supported by our students, our staff, our parents and our community.”

“Our mission is Edgewood is committed to earning state STEM accreditation by intentional implementation of cross-curricular and project-based learning, student inquiry and collaborative problem solving,” Hauselman said.

Project Lead the Way teacher Abbi Richcreek said the school’s STEM rubric is required by the Indiana Department of Education for Edgewood to become STEM certified. In part of the rubric, Edgewood has to provide evidence, which the school has, on curriculum, instruction and partnerships.

Edgewood had to provide the evidence to the state in a way IDOE could see. The school decided to do that by creating a website, which Richcreek said she helped develop.

She said the evidence was sent to the state and the school will know by Dec. 10 if Edgewood can go to the next round for certification. IDOE will give the school feedback when they let Edgewood know.

Science teacher Jason Fleming said when the school went to three of the main stakeholders of Edgewood becoming STEM certified, they went to the staff first.

The results of a survey put out stated the staff was very willing to work toward the certification, Fleming said.

Edgewood students were also surveyed because students need to have a say in what the curriculum may look like and how they would like to take on the different aspect of STEM education, he said.

Results said students understood math, science and engineering skills are very important to future skills, he said.

The last stakeholders are the parents. Fleming said based on feedback from parents, they were very receptive to looking into the possibility of moving forward with STEM certification.

In other business, the Board approved resolutions for the 2022 lease for the Warsaw Community High School project.

After the meeting, Chief Financial Officer April Fitterling said the resolution is for the school corporation “to continue with the type of lease issuance for the 2022 WCHS project that establishes the lease from the building corporation.”

The Board also voted to continue to work with the established building corporation and it’s members.

Under Indiana law, building corporations may be formed as part of a lease financing process to assist certain Indiana taxing units, including schools, libraries, counties and municipalities in constructing and financing a project. A building corporation owns the facility constructed with bond proceeds and leases the facility back to the taxing unit. In this manner, the building corporation acts as an "on behalf of" issuer of bonds for the taxing unit, she said.
