Hurd Is Veteran Of The Month

If Gary Hurd could serve his country again, he said he would happily do so.

Hurd is the Kosciusko County April Veteran of the Month, and he was recognized by the Kosciusko County Commissioners and Veterans Affairs Officer Rich Maron Tuesday.

According to Hurd’s biography, read by Maron at the Commissioners meeting, Hurd was born in Auxier, Ky., on April 12, 1947, to Isom and Worlie Hurd, he is the youngest of 10 children. He grew up in Claypool and graduated from Claypool High School in 1965.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in November 1965. He did his basic training at Lackland Air Base in Texas, and his tech school at Shepherd Air Force Base in Texas.

His first assignment would take him to Sewart Air Base in Smyrna, Tenn., where he became a crew chief on a C-130, Maron said. Hurd spent 2-1/2 years there. He then received an overseas assignment to Clark Air Force Base in the Philippine Islands and would get temporary duty assignments in and out of Vietnam from there.

Hurd was discharged in November 1969.

He married Sandra England in March 1970. He worked 31 years for Kosciusko REMC. He has two children, Dr. Tabitha Temple and Timothy Hurd, and five grandchildren.

Hurd is an active member of New Hope Freewill Baptist Church.

He is fully retired. His hobbies include gardening, cutting fire wood and visiting church members who are sick and shut-in.

After the certificate presentation and photos, Hurd said, “I’d like to say thank you to all of you for being here today for my honor. I appreciate my classmates, my friends being here, and you I don’t know really well. Thank you for the honor. I appreciate being able to serve my country like I did. I would do it all over again if I could. Thank you very much.”
