A Warsaw man is facing charges after police allegedly busted him with stolen items from a storage unit and drugs.

Rick Leslie Kensinger, 40, of 503 W. Center St., Warsaw, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 6:53 p.m. Sunday and charged with burglary, a Level 5 felony; theft, a Level 6 felony; possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony; possession of a syringe, a Level 6 felony; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Wednesday in Kosciusko Circuit Court, on April 9, Warsaw police were dispatched to local storage units after a man said multiple large construction tools had been stolen from his unit, including a gas generator and a red Earthquake auger.

As officers convened on the area, they began to look for others at the storage units who may have information.

According to court papers, police noticed a white van with two occupants who seemed to be getting items from another unit.

Police approached and asked the driver of the van – later identified as Kensinger – if he’d had anything stolen from his unit, to which Kensinger allegedly replied he has in the past but nothing recently.

When police asked Kensinger if they could search his van and unit to look for the missing items, Kensinger denied that request. However, according to the affidavit, while police were speaking with Kensinger they observed a red auger partially covered up, along with several gym bags that looked to be full.

When they asked Kensinger about the auger, Kensinger allegedly said he had just bought the van yesterday from a man named “Josh” at the Walmart parking lot, and he purchased the red auger and other items.

A K9 then conducted a free-air sniff on the van and made a positive alert on the vehicle.

Police obtained a warrant to search the van, and according to the affidavit, located the auger, a power washer, chop saw, hydraulic jack, table saw, fall safety harness, air dehumidifier, label maker, saw set, air compressor, shop vacuum and jumper cable set.

Also in the vehicle, police allegedly found methamphetamine, 14 syringes, a clear plastic bag containing a white, crystal-like substance, a red and silver spoon containing a crystal-like residue, a tote containing multiple plastic straws, cotton balls and a metal spoon and a used glass smoking device.

Police then obtained a search warrant for Kensinger’s storage unit and, according to the affidavit, located a sander, roofing nail gun, two socket sets, a T-bar hitch and a light stand with lights.

The victim identified all of the items found to be the ones that he reported stolen, according to court papers. The value of the items is more than $750 but less than $50,000.

Kensinger’s bond was set at $5,250.
