A Wolcottville woman recently was arrested for allegedly using a phony $100 bill at an area gas station.

Ashley Marie Meringa, 33, of Wolcottville, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:04 a.m. Friday and is charged with counterfeiting, a Level 6 felony; and theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed June 15 in Kosciusko Superior Court II, on May 5, 2020, police responded to a local gas station after an employee said a woman – later identified as Meringa – used a fake $100 bill to purchase $27.91 in merchandise from the store.

The clerk said she questioned the validity of the bill, and it did not pass the systems in place to identify false currency.

Meringa allegedly left with $70.84 in change from the purchase and is accused of stealing a lighter and doughnuts.

Her bond was set at $5,250.
