Advanced Solar Offers Solar Systems For ‘Pretty Much Anybody’

Advanced Solar offers residential, commercial and agricultural solar systems for “pretty much anybody in northern Indiana,” according to founder Glen Miller Wednesday.

“We do not-for-profit, we get into solar for the RV industry, also, so we do solar systems on RVs and do service for RVs also,” he said.

The Leesburg company recently moved to 474 W. Levi Lee Road, Warsaw, and the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Advanced Solar Wednesday afternoon.

Miller founded Advanced Solar in 2013.

“We started the business at home. We were at home for a couple of years, working out of the house, and then we moved up to Leesburg. So we were in Leesburg for a little over approximately four years. We just moved here (to 474 W. Levi Lee Road, Warsaw) a couple of weeks ago,” Miller said. “We thank all of the community support we had and all of our customers in northern Indiana.”

Some local projects that Advanced Solar has done that people might recognize are at the NAPA store on North Detroit Street, Global Auto on South Buffalo Street, San Jose Foods on North Detroit and Lowery’s Sewing on Winona Avenue.

“Solar can be on any scale. It can be from a cabin scale all the way up to an industrial scale. So, a residential scale, most of the time the solar panels are going to be on the roof of the house. Sometimes ground mounts, structures, but in a small scale,” Miller explained. “In the commercial scale, they can be on the ground or on the roof. So if you look at the NAPA one, it’s pretty easy to see. There’s a lot up there to see. They didn’t have the ground space, so we put everything on the roof.”

He said Advanced Solar’s business is about 50-50 between residential and commercial, with commercial picking up. “They have higher incentives on the commercial side, so that’s something that is definitely picking up,” Miller said.

As for benefits of going solar, Miller said for residential it’s “producing your own energy. It’s a green environment. The savings you can have on producing your own electricity. The big incentive right now is a 26% tax credit – that’s on any system, it doesn’t matter if it’s residential or commercial. Commercial and Ag will fall into grants that are available, so we can do grants for any that are not-for-profit. Any small business or commercial ag, we can do grants for. They definitely have higher incentives, including the 26% tax credit on top of that.”

Miller said Advanced Solar carries quite a few different sizes of solar panels. There are different sizes that come into play when they’re talking RV versus residential versus commercial. “So there’s different physical sizes of them and power production sizes. So, larger scales we get into the larger panels. It makes the system more cost-effective in that scale, which a lot of times the larger-scale panels are not a good fit for roof mounts for in the smaller-scale residential-size systems.”

He said they design build any system custom to the customers’ needs.

If anyone is interested in going solar, Miller said the first step is to contact Advanced Solar and they will talk to the customer and educate them on what they are asking.

“We will educate in the sense of what their power-usage is to what they’re looking at on how solar works in general. And then the process after that is doing a site visit. We would come out on site and do a site evaluation. At that point is where we start custom-building the system to fit wherever they need to go ... everything is customized at that point to the project. And then we build it,” he said.

Advanced Solar does offer a couple of different finance options. There is in-house financing and they work with banks that do a lot of financing for them.

“We’re local. We’re a family-owned business. You’re not going to deal with someone out of state,” said John Moorman, office manager.

“Our goal in this business is we strive for educating our customers prior to buying anything and delivering quality and customer service. That’s our goal behind the business,” Miller concluded.
