By Staff Report-

This spring United Way is partnering with Warsaw Community Schools and Whitley County Consolidated Schools for Read United.

This program allows volunteers to read to kindergarten, first- and second-grade classes once a week for four weeks, according to a news release from United Way.

According to Darren Bickel, president of United Way of Whitley & Kosciusko Counties, “Normally our volunteers would enjoy entering the classroom and have an opportunity to get to know the students and teacher. This year, of course, is a little different. While we are unable to enter schools, we can still reach out to the classrooms through Zoom calls.”

Since last summer, more than 150 volunteers have been a part of Read United.  According to volunteers, the Zoom calls are highly successful. Volunteers will have a wonderful experience this spring with the same process, the release states.

How You Can Help

United Way is asking for 65 volunteers to read to a child’s class via a Zoom experience. Once a week, for four weeks, a reader will have the opportunity to read a book to a classroom.

If you are interested in volunteering, go to www.unitedwaykosciusko.org and register to read to a children’s classroom. The deadline to sign up for Read United is April 7. Zoom calls with the students will begin the week of April 12.
