Triton Preparing For Caston In Regionals

The Comets (10-15) won their second consecutive sectional title, but Triton has the better record at 19-5.
Trojans head coach Jason Groves, who must include the two other tournament participants, 12-11 Fremont and electric 26-2 Kouts in his sights, isn’t looking past the Comets yet, although the trojans already beat them 56-37 February 6.
“Caston is good in many areas. Their guards can really shoot the ball, and they have guys that can put it in the floor and get to the basket or kick to the shooters,” Groves said. “They also have a freak of an athlete inside who can hurt you as well.”
On the other side of the ball, their switching defense can be problematic as well.
Comet guards Kade Zeider (10.3 ppg), and Joey Spin (9.4 ppg) take care of business on the perimeter. The freak on the inside is Sam Smith (10.3 ppg). Despite the 10-15 record, Caston’s squad has a year of experience playing in a regional already under their belt.
A win for the Trojans puts them in the evening’s final for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off. Groves must make time in this week’s pre-game prep for two different outcomes if Triton plays as well as they have in recent games to advance to the evening fray.
“It’s definitely different. For the coaches, most of the week our focus is on the first defined opponent,” Groves said. “Throughout the week, we try to sprinkle in some things we need to work in preparation for the other two teams. Our coaches (are keeping) busy with scouting this week. Our players’ focus needs to be on Caston throughout the week.”
The Trojans play an aggressive team defense that capitalizes on opponents’ mistakes followed by quick pushes up-court in transition. The regional hosts scored 24 points off 17 Argos turnovers in last weekend’s Culver sectional title
Guards Ashton Oviedo and Tyson Yates combine for an average of five steals per game. The duo swiped nine balls against Argos, and when they weren’t streaking for fast break baskets themselves (combined for 31 points last Saturday), they were feeding other Trojans.
The tournament favorite are the Kouts Mustangs (26-2) who dominate opponents by an average margin of 24 points per contest, putting up an average of 76 points per outing. Twin brothers and Mustang guards Cole and Cale Wireman (27 ppg, and 16 ppg respectively) capitalize on scoring opportunities afforded by an aggressive defense who snares nearly 11 steals per game.
“You have been blessed with a great opportunity,” Groves said he would tell his team. “Do everything in your power to take advantage of this opportunity, but, more importantly, go out and enjoy it and play with energy, effort, and passion.”
