Kindergarten Round-Up For Wawasee Set For April 22

SYRACUSE – Dr. Stephen Troyer, Wawasee Community School Corporation’s superintendent, announced kindergarten round-up at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

Kindergarten round-up will take place at Syracuse, Milford and North Webster elementaries on April 22 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

“Schools will be getting more specific information out about round-up events soon,” Troyer said. “And I will tell you, I’ve talked a lot about it, enrollment is very important to us right now, and this is a very significant year for round-up following COVID and just all the things we’re dealing with here at Wawasee. Our elementary principals are looking forward to getting that put together.”

He said they are planning an in-person round-up.

“I think that there are probably students  whose parents chose not to enroll them in kindergarten last year because of everything going on, and we’re hoping to get them in the buildings this year and get things to a really great start,” Troyer said.

He then segued into summer school programming. He said they are in the beginning stages of designing a comprehensive summer school program to address learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are planning for this to be the biggest and most robust summer school program that we’ve provided here at Wawasee,” Troyer said. “We’re looking at offering as much as we can in-person, and I can tell you that our principals are excited about this, and I think our families will be as well.”

Wawasee is looking at starting summer school the week of Memorial Day, which is May 31. Graduation is June 6.

Troyer also gave the board an update on COVID-19 in the school district.

“We continue to see positive things related to COVID, which is nice,” he said.

In February, Wawasee had a total of 11 COVID positive cases in its schools, which included nine students and two staff members. Troyer said that was encouraging.

“Student positivity rate is down 62% from January. Staff positivity rate is down 84% from January, and the total is down 70%, so that’s encouraging,” he said.

In February, there were 114 student quarantines and 12 staff members. The student quarantine rate is done 27%, he said, though the staff quarantine rate is up 20% though there were only 12 in quarantine. The total - staff and students combined - was still down 25%, he said. “So things are continuing to look positive.”

Don Bokhart, board president, said it was exciting to see that vaccinations are now going to be open for teachers and staff members.

“We’re working on some things related to that,” Troyer said. “We hope that our staff will be able to – those that want to – get the vaccine as soon as they can.”
