Old Jail Museum Reopens Today With New Co-Director

By Amanda Bridgman-

The Old Jail Museum in Warsaw officially reopened today and has a new co-director in Nanette Frantz.

Frantz joins Greg Steffe help run the operations of the museum and began her work two weeks ago.

It’s a far cry from the decade she spent working in the child support office with the Kosciusko County Prosecuting Attorney. She retired from there Dec. 18.

Frantz said she’s known Steffe for a long time and he contacted her about the opening, knowing that she has lived in Warsaw nearly all her life and enjoys history.

Frantz hopes to help bring in more traffic to the museum, especially young people.

“You gotta do something to get kids interested in history to see how they fit in to it,” Frantz said. “It’s not just a bunch of boring stuff. There’s some really cool stuff that’s gone on here.”

Frantz said before the COVID-19 pandemic shut things down, school tours with students were coming through the museum.

A new website rollout and using Facebook more to garner attention are planned, too, she said.

Right now, the John Dillinger exhibit is still up after pandemic restrictions halted the museum’s plan for a Dillinger event downtown. That event might take place this fall, Frantz said.

Also up right now is an exhibit on the history of blizzards in Kosciusko County, and another celebrating women in the county’s history for Women’s History Month.

Frantz will continue to help with programming ideas and said people can help support the museum by becoming a member.

The museum averages between 350 to 400 members yearly, and cost is $25 for a basic membership. Members will receive a subscription to “The Thaddeus,” a quarterly magazine of Kosciusko County and its Historical Society.

The museum is free to attend, but donations are appreciated.

The museum reopened today and will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

For questions or more information about the museum, call 574-269-1078 or visit www.kosciuskohistory.com.

“I’m excited to be here,” Frantz said. “It’s so dramatically different than anything I’ve ever done before, and I?think it will be a lot of fun.”
