LARWILL – Steve Darnell has been named interim superintendent for Whitko Community Schools.

He will perform the regulatory responsibilities of the school superintendent position as required by Indiana law during the transition period until the new superintendent is hired, according to a news release from Whitko. Dr. Brandon Penrod, the former superintendent, resigned effective Feb. 15. The school board is looking for the next superintendent to begin responsibilities July 1.

Recently retired as a public school superintendent, Darnell has over 35 years in education at the local and state levels. He has been a teacher, athletic director, building administrator and worked for the Indiana and state of Delaware Departments of Instruction.

He plans to draw upon his experience to ensure there is a smooth transition from Penrod to the new person, according to the release.

Whitko School Board President Lynn Studebaker said, “Mr. Steve Darnell comes to us with a wealth of experience as a superintendent. I’ve been impressed with his willingness to jump in and familiarize himself with Whitko, our administrators and staff. He has been hard at work, positively impacting our corporation with his insights, and we are so fortunate to have him on board for the remainder of the school year.”

The news release states that Darnell “wants to ensure the exceptional services and education that is provided by school employees continues seamlessly during the remaining months of the 2020-21 school year. He wants parents and students to know Whitko employees continue to be here to ensure the best possible education occurs and will continue through the last day of instruction for the current school year.”

Darnell has been married to Debbie for 36 years. They have two grown sons, Bruce and Mike, who are married and have children.

He is active at his church, Emmanuel Community Church, in Fort Wayne as the offering counter coordinator and as a leader for the Stephen Ministry Program with Debbie.
