By Staff Report-

Sacred Heart School announced the winner of the Christ the Teacher Award for the 2020-21 school year is preschool teacher Cindy Hollowell.

Every year, each school in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend and its Catholic Schools Office selects a Christ the Teacher Award winner. Recently, all students, families and staff members were given the opportunity to nominate a teacher for this prestigious award. The criteria for teacher nominees include the ability to motivate students academically, relate to students well, be involved in extracurricular activities and lead students, by words and example, to a greater understanding of their relationship with God.

A committee was then formed to review the nominations and submit their recommendation, according to a news release from Sacred Heart.

From the nomination letters, Hollowell is an “excellent educator who cares and nurtures SHS’s youngest scholars, lights a fire for learning and celebrates relationships and student learning with parents and the school community. Scholars come home excited to share their learning about the tenants of the faith.”

Hollowell equips her students to lead prayer in their homes, singing the same prayers that they learned in preschool thanks to Hollowell, the release states. Students also come home equally excited to share about their foundational reading skills, such as letter sounds or letter identification skills.

Hollowell gets students excited about learning. To make this happen, she plans fun and exciting learning opportunities like story time out in the woods, craft time on outdoor picnic tables and letter hunts on a hike. One only needs to look at the preschool Facebook page to see all of the fun learning activities.

She is committed to communication, constantly sharing insights with parents regarding their child’s learning. In the classroom, she effortlessly gains control of the class after an energetic activity.

As far as extracurricular activities go, she plans fun field trips for the preschool, but that is not the extent of her impact. She has had a hand in planning for the last day of school, the first day of school, took the lead on the school's community meal preparations and many other activities & celebrations. Not to be lost in all of this should be the fact that she is having this wonderful impact despite spending a substantial amount of time during the summer relocating to an all-new campus at Warsaw Church of God on Rozella Road without letting such a move dampen her love of teaching and learning, according to the news release.

The Sacred Heart Preschool Open House is Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at Warsaw Church of God, 1059 Rozella Road.
