He was born on April 29, 1946, in Ferndale, Mich., to Mildred Dufresne Lloyd and John Marion Lloyd. On Nov. 3, 1973, he married his best friend and love of his life, Kathryn “Kathy” Carpenter Lloyd. They shared the joy of raising four children together, becoming grandparents and sharing everything thrown at them in their 47 years of marriage before he passed away.
Larry grew up and experienced life living in Australia as the son of missionary parents. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served from Nov. 21, 1966, until his honorable discharge Aug. 31, 1970. He traveled the world serving in the Philippines, Thailand and South Korea as a radar communications specialist in the Air Force.
After his military service and getting married, he moved to Winona Lake from Detroit, Mich., and attended Grace College in Winona Lake with the intention of earning his teaching degree. He studied for three years at Grace, and life had other plans for him when he started working at Zimmer Inc. in Warsaw. He worked as a CAD designer at Zimmer for many years and spent the last 40 years making the area his home. Larry enjoyed the fellowship of his church family at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, where he was able to share his heart for teaching that he had originally set out to do and taught Sunday school for many years.
He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and was always known as being “a very steady man.” The one thing everyone knew about Larry, and he wasn’t shy about sharing his thoughts, was that he hated the Cowboys football team! Larry just loved life and enjoyed it moreso because of his love for his family. He will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many and will be dearly missed.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Kathy C. Lloyd, Winona Lake; two sons: Christopher (Grace) Lloyd, Winona Lake; and Jonathan Lloyd, Indianapolis; and two daughters: Marilyn (Austin) Valentine, Warsaw; and Abby Lloyd, Warsaw. He leaves behind his two favorite grandchildren: Calvin and Emma Lloyd; and his sister, Nancy (John) Davidson, Australia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Lloyd; and his sister, Sharon Hungerford.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw. Larry’s life will be celebrated with a service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28 at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, 1200 Kings Highway, Winona Lake, and officiated by Pastor Kip Cone. A graveside service will be held at later date with military rites at Oakwood Cemetery of Warsaw and officiated by Pastor Bruce Barlow.
