AKRON – In their first meeting of the year, Tippecanoe Valley School Board members voted on officers for 2021.

Tom Bauters was elected president, Adam Heckaman was named vice president and David Lash, secretary. Jessica McFarland was approved as the school corporation’s treasurer.

The regular meetings for the year will be at 6 p.m. the third Monday of every month.

During Monday’s meeting, the school board will be asked to approve several donations.

Some of the donations include a $100 donation for Boomerang Backpacks from St. Joseph Church, said Superintendent Blaine Conley. Other donations include $5,000 from Instrumental Machine and Development Inc. and a $2,500 donation from Splendor Boats for Viking Vittles, which is the Boomerang Backpack program the school corporation runs out of the middle school. Another donation for $2,000 is from Good Oil Company for school safety.

Conley said the school corporation will be working with a consultant in the spring for an analysis of Tippecanoe Valley Schools. The school corporation will look at the recommendations from the consultant and will “hold off and use that money based on what those recommendations are from our consultant, who is going to help us with school safety.”

Four juniors will be recognized Monday as Rising Stars of Indiana Class of 2022, Conley said. “We’ve invited those students to the meeting, along with their families, and we want to show you guys what they’re up to.”

Conley said it was good being back in school and “everybody’s working really hard meeting the needs in this different type of situation” and the staff at the school corporation is doing the best they can.

“Our kids, I think, were surprised, in terms of how much we were in school this first semester and we’ve got seven days here at the high school we were doing virtual instruction, but K-8, we ran the whole semester. We feel really blessed to do that and that will be our goal here in the second semester,” Conley said.
