Man Who Crashed Into House Charged
By Amanda Bridgman-
At 5:01 p.m. Tuesday, Warsaw police responded to 324 S. High St. after a 2016 white Ford Fusion hit the house and fully entered the home’s living room.
The homeowners, Robert and Sally Lamirand, were both inside the residence when the crash occurred, according to the police report, and both were uninjured.
Rangel was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 8:58 p.m. Tuesday to face felony charges of criminal recklessness and criminal mischief with damage of at least $50,000. His bond was set at $600.
According to the crash report, Rangel told police he was traveling west on East Winona Avenue after just leaving a residence on Fort Wayne Street. Rangel said he was upset and made his way to East Winona Avenue and started traveling west.
Rangel told police that because he was upset he did not want to wait for traffic, so he drove in the center turn lane on East Winona Avenue, passing vehicles, driving approximately 80 mph.
As Rangel went over the railroad tracks just prior to entering the intersection of North Detroit Street, he swerved to go around a car, lost control, going through the intersection and started to slide sideways down East Winona Avenue, according to the report.
Rangel told police he tried to correct his vehicle from sliding, which caused it to hit the curb and sidewalk in front of 321 S. High St., strike a fire hydrant in the yard then continue west, crossing over South High Street, going over the curb and launching into the air, going through the picture glass window on the front side of 324 S. High St.
Rangel was then able to climb out of his vehicle and out the house, according to police, where he was then checked by medics on scene and refused medical treatment.
Police reported that while speaking with Rangel he seemed confused and lethargic, so they administered a breathalyzer test and took him to Kosciusko Community Hospital for a consented blood draw. The breathalyzer test came back at 0.00, according to police.
Estimated damage is more than $50,000. WPD was assisted by Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office and Lutheran EMS.
