Lady Tigers Overcome Sluggish Start, Now 14-3

Now in first place atop the Northern Lakes Conference after their close win over Northridge on Saturday, Warsaw had no intention of slowing down against the 4-8 Lady Cavemen.
The baskets had other ideas, however.
A quick three-pointer by Kensie Ryman got the scoring started but then it was a three-minute drought before either team scored again. Still up only 3-2 after the first six minutes. Warsaw finally scored again on two free throws by Audrey Grimm.
Mishawaka led 7-5 at the end of a very lackluster first quarter, punctuated by numerous airballs and missed layups by both sides, along with a number of questionable calls.
Head Coach Lenny Krebs cited fatigue as a factor.
“I can’t fault our effort but I don’t think we were mentally focused the way we needed to be. We weren’t as sharp as we needed to be but I think we’re also a little bit fatigued right now.”
Just as the first quarter began, a quick Warsaw three-pointer, this one by sharpshooter Kacily Krebs, put the Lady Tigers ahead 8-7.
The miserable shooting by both teams continued until Krebs scored again to put Warsaw up 10-7 but not until midway through the second period. A shot under the basket by Ryman gave Warsaw a five-point lead, then two free throws by Krebs gave her seven as the Lady Tigers finally started to establish their dominance. Another trey by Krebs gave her 10 points for the quarter and a 14-7 Warsaw lead with 2:42 left before halftime.
The only basket in the quarter for Mishawaka made the score 18-9 at halftime following a 13-2 run by the Lady Tigers.
At the half, Krebs had 10 points (all in the second quarter), Ryman 6 and Grimm 2.
Krebs continued her hot streak with another three-pointer to begin the third quarter and the Lady Tigers were finally rolling, 21-9. Abby Sanner scored under the basket to give Warsaw a 23-9 lead and the scoring run stretched to 18-2. The Lady Tigers finally showed their mettle, scoring at will while not allowing a field goal by Mishawaka the entire third quarter. A free throw by the Lady Cavemen with seconds to go made the score 31-10 at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Cavemen scored six to begin the final stanza before Warsaw resumed their scoring barrage.
Freshman Ava Wetzel took advantage of her playing time in the fourth quarter with four quick points as the Lady Tigers went back up by 20, 38-18. Both teams scored only once more as Warsaw held on for a 40-21 win.
“We have to be able to hit more outside shots than we did today and be a little more consistent inside,” Krebs added. “On a positive note we only gave up 21 points. But Goshen is going to be coming at us hard on Saturday and we’re going to have to be better than we were today.”
Warsaw didn’t have its best shooting night, connecting on only 29% from the field. The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Krebs with 13, Ryman 6, and Bailie Stephens 5, and Ava Wetzel 4 as the Lady Tigers improved to 14-3 (5-0 NLC) on the season.
In JV action, Warsaw won 48-12 to go to 10-3 on the season.
Warsaw will have its Lady Tiger Basketball Senior Night prior to Saturday’s home game against Goshen. The senior class, in three years on the varsity, have compiled a 44-20 record (15-3 NLC).
