Two Warsaw Community High School students enlisted in the Army National Guard to help them with their future plans.

Kaley Rodriguez, 17, a junior, is the daughter of Angela and Edward Rodriguez, Warsaw.

Jorge Alvarez, 18, a senior, is the son of Maria Hurtdao and Juan Carlos, both of Warsaw.

“I’ve actually wanted to (join the National Guard) since I was little. I’ve always talked to my parents about it since I was little,” Kaley said, adding that she has family that have been in the military. Her aunt is in the Navy, her grandpa was in the Army. “So I’ve had a lot of family in the (military).”

Alvarez said he wanted to join the Guard because he’s had a lot of friends with family members who have served in the National Guard or other military branches. “They’ve all told me stories about what it was like for them in the military and that’s what inspired me to join the National Guard,” he said.

Both students have participated in the Junior ROTC program at WCHS. Kaley just joined this semester, and Alvarez has been in it for three years.

In the Guard, Kaley said she originally wanted to pursue military police but that is not available currently. Instead, she’s pursuing a military occupational specialty (MOS) as a CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) specialist.

She plans to do ROTC in college and branch off into the infantry while at college. She hopes to go to Indiana University in Bloomington. Her major will be psychology and criminal justice, with a minor in sociology and the science of warfare.

Alvarez’s MOS will be the infantry.

“I like to be active every day, and running and doing workouts and all that. I found out that infantry was mainly that, and I just like to stay active,” he said.

Alvarez also wants to pursue a position with the military police and then become a police officer.

“So my goal is to go to the military. When I’m done with that, go to Ivy Tech in Warsaw and then enlist in the police academy,” he said.

Kaley will go to basic training June 1, while Alvarez goes July 6.
