Manchester Civic Band Preps For 49th Year

The band performs free live music ranging from traditional marches and concert band pieces to jazz and big band favorites. Newer pop and rock music also are played.
The all-volunteer amateur band was organized by Harold and Mary Lou Leckrone and their daughter, Pat Egolf, in 1972. After Harold’s passing in 1987, the band leadership transitioned and eventually Reg Smith took the baton, according to a news release. After 30-plus years directing the band, Smith decided to step back and Samantha “Sam” Howard is now setting the beat.
The band welcomes any musicians from junior high age and up and any instruments. Many members came back to band after decades of not playing, so don’t worry if you haven’t played in awhile, the release states.
Assistance is available if you don’t have your own instrument, with the band organizers possibly being able to help locate one for use, rent or purchase.
Practice is 7 p.m. Wednesday and ends around 8:30 to 9 p.m. in the Manchester High School band room. Members can come when they are able and stay for as long or as little as their schedule allows.
The first practice is 7 p.m. March 3 in the MHS band room. Enter through the double doors at the southeast corner of the building.
