Chuck, or Charlie to some from his younger days, was born in Warsaw on March 1, 1936, to Warren and Elouise Morehead – one of four siblings raised in a small house on Center Street.
He graduated in 1954 from Warsaw High School, where he was on the track, football and basketball teams and sang in the Glee Club.
He attended Butler University and then Ball State University, where he met his wife, Bonnie, whom he married in 1957. They were married for 63 years.
He served in the Indiana National Guard for six years, achieving the rank of staff sergeant.
Chuck worked for Howe Fire Apparatus for five years, and then for 32 years at Delco Remy in Anderson in skilled trades as a sheet metal worker.
A skilled carpenter, Chuck was known for his keen ability to build and fix just about anything. When the family moved into their current home in 1968, he finished the second story of the house himself. Future projects would include a playhouse and a treehouse for his grandchildren.
A gifted singer, Chuck demonstrated his lifelong love for music by singing tenor since 1992 with the Anderson Symphonic Choir. He enjoyed listening to recordings of the choir’s performances while taking daily walks to log steps on his Fitbit.
Chuck and Bonnie traveled to multiple places in the U.S. and around the world during their marriage, including an Italian cruise that made stops in France, Croatia and Spain, and a Baltic cruise that took them to England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Russia.
Chuck was a dedicated member of the Warsaw Class of 1954, helping to organize regular lunch gatherings of his classmates and keeping in touch with many of them via email and Facebook.
Chuck had a soft spot for animals, and over the years took in and tenderly cared for many rescued and stray cats. He was also a very willing dog sitter for a number of granddogs.
In addition to his wife, Bonnie, he is survived by his son, Jeff (Brenda); and daughter, Karin (Jeff) Kiefer; four grandchildren: AJ Rosengarten, Samuel and Anna Morehead, Jessica (Rob) Redden; and three great-grandchildren: Leia Hinkle, Isabella Burgeson and Caroline Redden.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Glenn and Allen Morehead; and his sister, Carolyn Youse. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, David “Tyler” Hinkle.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home, 513 E. 53rd St., Anderson, and will be livestreamed on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/BBDFuneral/posts/1703378559842590. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the funeral home. Burial will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17 at the Mock Cemetery in North Webster. Those attending services are asked to wear a mask and observe social distancing.
