Warsaw (14-7) took care of business with a 76-32 win that gave Head Coach Matt Moore an opportunity to try some varied rotations in prepareation for the post season.
“I'm a celebrate rarely, grind daily kind of guy,” Moore said. “They understand if I'm going to play ‘em, it's trust time. If they're going to stay on the floor, they need to continue to do things the right way, and they'll be rewarded for that with another opportunity.”
A handful of the Tigers’ situational contributors capitalized on some additional minutes afforded by the blowout victory.
Graydon Brath, a 6’11” senior, earned more offensive touches in the lane, and responded with four points and a blocked shot. Brath’s presence also redirected several Wabash shots.
Fellow senior Caleb Sands scored four points, dished out three assists, and snared three steals.
Drew Heckaman, a sophomore normally deployed for defense and playing with length inside, scored a career-high ten points on five for six shooting from the field.
Kyle Dawson, another sophomore, made the most of his six minutes on the court, adding six points and four rebounds.
A season high 22 assists reflected the hosts solid team effort. Warsaw’s big men dished out half of those feeds from the high post. Jackson Dawson found open teammates for six assists, and Russ Winchester added five more to the cause.
Jaxson Gould and Judah Simfukwe led Warsaw’s scoring effort with 15 points apiece. Ben Bergen and Bishop Walters (eight points each), Kyle Dawson (six points), Jackson Dawson (four points), and Russ Winchester (two points) rounded out the evening’s offensive output.
The Tigers hit 35 of 51 shots (67%) from the field including five of 12 (42%) from beyond the arc. Warsaw hit 50% of their free throws (three for six), and outrebounded the Apaches 33-22 with Gould, Jackson Dawson and Winchester grabbing five rebounds each.
Moore reflected on the four seniors’ (Bergen, Brath, Sands, and Walters) collective growth following the final home game.
“Those four seniors, personality-wise, each of them has added value in their own way which has been very instrumental in our team’s shift to success,” Moore said. “All four of them have done a great job in their leadership, and it's just fun because they show up and they add value every day.”
The JV Tigers needed a double overtime to down Wabash 47-42. Freshmen Jeremiah Dawson (14 points, nine rebounds, three steals) and Julian Saldivar (nine points, two steals) led the way for Warsaw.
The Tigers’ focus will now be on its final regular season game at South Bend Washington Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. JV tip-off.
