Wawasee’s Jace Alexander, the school’s first four-time state qualifier, heads up a quartet of area qualifiers to the IHSAA state wrestling meet that begins this Friday at Banker’s Life Field House in Indianapolis.

Alexander (138 lb. weight class) placed third in the East Chicago Semi-State experiencing his first loss of the year in the semifinal round. The senior pinned all three of his opponents in the other matches.

Three other area qualifiers will get their first taste of state tourney action. Alexander’s teammate, Brendan Dilley (126 lbs, 4th place), Warsaw’s Brandon Estepp (182 lbs, 4th place), and Tippecanoe Valley’s Bazle Owens (195 lbs, 4th place) are the other area athletes headed to Indy.

The Tigers started the day in East Chicago with five wrestlers.

Senior Jacob Linky’s (170 lbs) bid for a repeat appearance in the Circle City came to an early end. Linky was unable to work his regular magic and closed out his high school career at 84-17.

Jose Martinez’s (132 lbs) final career match was a tough draw as well. The senior was unable to score a win and his final career mark sits at 69-47.

Junior Andrew Ross (138 lbs) was eliminated in the first round by the Semi-State’s eventual weight class champion. Freshman Elias Garza (113 lbs) also faced a first-round loss.

Wawasee launched their Saturday morning contention with eight wrestlers.

Hunter Miller (113 lbs) and Dylan Tom (120 lbs) lost in the ticket round. Warriors facing first round losses were Kaleb Salazar (106 lbs), Logan Stuckman (132 lbs), Gavin Malone (145 lbs) and Cameron Zimmerman (170 lbs).

Valley had three other wrestlers who finished their season in East Chicago: Galvin Shambaugh (106 lbs), Branson McBrier (152 lbs), and Brandon Hammer (182 lbs).

Triton’s three Semi-State qualifiers, Elijah Cox (152 lbs), Anthony Schuh (220 lbs), and Caleb Lemler (285 lbs) experienced first round losses as well.
